Just watching that Benitez-Hearns footage and his jab is so good man, I defo take him over Napoles all things considered.

 

He was making a good go against Monzon in the early going until that clubbing sensation forced him to wilt.

Hearns at Welter is a wholly different proposition than Monzon at middle of course. Napoles head movement could allow him to cut inside and let off those famous hooks. I don't see any scope for his uppercuts here, the dimensions won't allow it IMO.

I guess, ultimately, Hearns is exactly the kinda' guy to mess Mantequillas face up.

 

Crazy to think that Benitez was on the downside of his career at that point at 24 years old and was shot to **** at 26!!!

 

I believe he had to 'do a Conteh' in this one due to a ****ed right hand.

Take away Hearns' primary weapon and it seems he was pretty versatile. As I say, apparently this Benitez fella was half decent.

Talking of Hearns................Duran fighting 5 years after the defeat to Hearns and Hagler at the age the age of 37 defeats Iran Barkey to win the WBC MW title.

I remember reading an article about Ray Arcel where he talked about sitting n his Manhattan apartment as a 90 year old man watching this fight. He couldn't believe what he was seeing and all he could say was "That's my Boy".

Do you reckon he really only trained a week for the fight with Ray? He lost widely IMO, though seeing as he hung in for the 15 (random stoppage similar to Marcel-Duran IMO) do you think the outcome could ever have been different?!?

 

I remember watching Duran-Barkley. It was a real moment in boxing, amazing esp that 4/5 punch combo Duran hit him with in the middle rounds. Vintage!!!

 

I really just think you've misread what took place in that fight. An accumulation stoppage isn't just when a guy lands a load of punches and then gets a stoppage. It isn't that simplistic. Froch had worked his way into the fight for a good 4-5 rounds in that fight with his clubbing punches, and they don't all have to land on the chin to be contributing to the overall effect. He was wearing down Taylor, that was really the key to why he got the stoppage. He didn't just rock up in round 12 and land a big punch and then get a stoppage. Exactly like Floyd didn't just land a left-hook and get a stoppage either. Although truthfully, that was far closer to a one punch stoppage than what Froch did where he'd been wearing down a stamina deficient Taylor and after an extended onslaught got a stoppage.

 

You never know mate but Leonard was a more complete fighter than Benitez. I'm not sure he had many other options than the one he played out though..

I'm too young to have seen it live but the man holds a place in my heart regardless. What a unique man. Legend. I'll tell you what is immortal for me, in the Duran-Moore fight, at the end of one of the rounds (i think early), Duran starts bouncing on the balls of his toes and is all in Moore's face, and Moore looks at him and then walks away, it's only at that point that he realises what he has gotten himself into.

 

I would'e went for that, but Durans best win was clearly when he was right at the top of his game.

That's one of the best wins of all time though IMO. A former lightweight?!?! His right hand is one of the most accurate I have ever seen, if not the most, and against a beast in Barkley you really saw it implemented well, as well as Durans ATG chin.

Another proof of Hearns' crushing power. Duran was as durable as they come. Stylewise Hearns had his number, and not even Duran could combat it.

I do think it could be a different fight at Welter though. Duran at his physical peak, and Hearns not at his....could you really see the Duran that fought Ray first time round getting blown away in two rounds?!?

Yep, a bit. Benitiez decline was a lot more stark than Currys though. Don was still holding his own in world class even after he was on the down slide, probably just shows how good he was for that 3-4 years at welterweight.
