Not really when you consider Chris' extravagant lifestyle.

He mentioned that a few years ago, selling his belts to not remind him of fighting days

I swear he gave his WBC belt to Michael Watson though?

That's the first I've heard of it. Fantastic gesture if he did.

Nigel Benn put the telephone down on Michael Watson four years ago and has not spoken to his former conqueror since then.

Benn insists in his book Dark Destroyer, that Watson said to him: "So, Nige are you off the gear?" before the receiver was replaced.

Benn would like to bury that particular hatchet, now that Watson has won his case against the British Boxing Board of Control following the injuries he sustained in the ill-fated fight against Chris Eubank in 1991.

However, while the former WBC and WBO middle and super-middleweight champion denies ever having had anything to do with drugs, he insists other fighters in this country are involved.

Benn said: "I got drug-tested all the time and a lot of boxers I know do that stuff.

"I don't care about them, they were knocking me down but they are putting gear up their noses and they've got nothing now.

"I'm talking about here (in Britain), the backstabbers, they are jealous because I've kept hold of mine (money) and not put nothing up my nose like them. I don't deal with them, they know who they are.

"You don't go and win two world titles and defend them so many times. I got off my backside and achieved something. I've got five kids to look after, that's why I'm annoyed.

"But now I'd like to talk to Michael and say `well done', he needed help," said Benn.

In the book, Benn refers to the conversation with Watson - who stopped him in six rounds in 1989 - which caused the disharmony.

"One day, we were talking on the phone and he said to me, `So, Nige, you off the gear?' `What gear?' `You know, the white gear...the charlie (cocaine).'

"I couldn't believe what he was saying. I said: 'Let me tell you something. I ain't never been on the gear to get off the gear. Why you coming to me asking these questions?'

He said: "I heard it from other people." See you later, Michael."

"I was really upset that Michael thought I might be doing that stuff. I've had plenty of offers and there are plenty of boxers who I know have been on Special K (a form of Ecstasy tablet).

"Some of them have retired and some are still fighting and they know who they are without me naming them.

"I even confronted a guy who was bad-mouthing me and he was shoving charlie up his nose at the time."

Despite being retired from the ring for nearly three years, the Benn magic still lives on and he signed copies of the book for three hours in London's West End yesterday.

But he does not miss the sport which made him rich and famous and though still looking in good shape, weighs close to 14 stone, almost two stones above his fighting weight.

"I've had a good career and a colourful life," added Benn at the launch. On Fridays and Saturdays, he performs as a DJ while much of his spare time is spent looking after his children and cooking.

"I don't want to be on the boxing circuit, but I like my former promoter Frank Warren," he said. "We had a nice relationship and a great time together."

Benn tips Manchester light-welterweight Richard Hatton as his star of the future.

He said: "I think he can go all the way. He keeps his cool and is a good body-puncher."
