Chris Byrd vs Roy Jones at HW, how would this of gone? I think it could of been an interesting fight, Byrd was quick, very skilled, a counter puncher, a southpaw, I think he could potentially of presented stylistic problems to Roy Jones, not sure whether he'd win, but what do you guys think?
Jones ate up southpaws because he was so good with lead power shots. Byrd was quick and slick, but Jones was quicker and I think his movement would also give Byrd problems who had a lot of success at heavy because of the sloths that stood in front of him. I think Byrd would get schooled rather easily in this one.
I think it would be a great fight. I am surprised it didnt happen, actually. I think it would be a toss up, but lean ever so slightly towards Jones based solely on the theory that a great little man will generally beat a good bigger man. Certainly, Byrd would struggle with being the slower fighter.
Jones would have been faster only if he weighed in as much but not any more than he weighed against Ruiz , but I think Jones knew the answer to this and therefore this fight which could have been a very good one didn't happen . I think each had the power to hurt the other and Byrd could have used his range advantage over Jones (don't think that they really have the same reach and that Byrd is only 1 inch taller) much better than Griffin had to overcome his vast range disadvantage compared to Jones (which he quite successfully managed to do) . If Griffin gave Jones that much trouble at his prime at 175 , then a much rangier , stronger and more durable Byrd (he could take so much from Wladimir) would trouble a somewhat slower version of RJJ much more at HW. Jones understood it , maybe Toney's management too.
Jones would have a good chance of stopping Byrd actually...and Chris would'nt have the pop to discourage Jones with.
jones stopping byrd?! no way. Hes been hit a lot harder and gotten up. most likely Jones wouldnt want this fight. Who wants to take on one unless they have to!
Dude took power shots from the Klitschkos and still fought on until Wlad finally raped him hard yet Roy stops him?
:good I think this would have been a far better route to take after beating John Ruiz. If I were Jones I'd face Byrd first and then face Tarver at Cruiserweight or at catch weight. Incidentally, Byrd getting knocked around the ring like a rag doll by George proves that moving down in weight later in your career will diminish your punch resistance.
I actually would pick Byrd based on the fact that Byrd is pretty quick and that would have troubled Jones.
Ruiz is one thing, Byrd is another. I'd only just pick Byrd in this one, he was a better head to head fighter than Ruiz and could have caused RJJ problems with his combination of size, handspeed, chin and slickness
