How is Damiani last? Damiani had some serious skills, he was a very underrated technician.

Suzie Q, why did you make a new account? Or is this your twin brother... I'm just curious. You don't even seem to hide the fact with your writing style. I could be mistaken, though.

Do you mean for them to be ranked on what they did in the 80s ?

As a heavyweight in the 80's can Evander really rank above Holmes and Tyson? I would say Spinks has more a claim to be ranked higher than Holy for the time period given, no?

The thread starter's #1 criteria was H2H potential though, which I'd say puts Holy on top regardless of whatever else each fighter managed to accomplish in the specified time period.

    Here's a couple

    1. Tyson (pretty much his entire reputation was made in the 80's. Holmes was 70's and Holy was 90's. Head to head I favor him (barely) against Holmes and Holy...little too much fury I think ;)

    2. Holmes. Was undefeated champ for the entire first half of the decade....I'd favor him at his best over all of the alphabet champions. His Jab is possibly the most effective heavyweight weapon of all time.

    3. Spinks-Laugh if you want, but Spinks was no slouch. He did what nobody in 48 Larry Holmes fights could do and that was beat him. Spinks was a master at timing and disrupting rhythm...and he can fight as seen against Cooney.

After this it's a bit murky as Holyfield was great in the late 80's with his slugfests with Dokes and Thomas. Awesome technician and made for great fights but did he do enough in the 80's to overtake people like Witherspoon who were multiple time champions? I think not.

    4. Tim Witherspoon. Beautful jab and style for a heavyweight. Gave Larry Holmes all he could handle in his 15th fight!

    5. Pinklon Thomas. Probably the second best jab of the era. Was able to tag Spoon much easier than even Larry!

    6. Evander Holyfield. Could rank him as high as 4 I think maybe, maybe 3. Spoon and Thomas had the more significant fights of the era so I gave them the edge plus they may have handled the Holy that was still ad******g against Dokes/Stewart.

    7. Might surprise people who don't know him, but since we're ranking h2h at best, Greg Page deserves a high ranking. Sometimes you just see a guy who was special and he was one of them....Great skills and ability but sadly basketball was his favorite sport so he never loved boxing and thus lost sometimes to people who had no business winning.

    8. Ruddock. Awesome power and had an impressive run in the late 80's. Dangerous and dusted guys like Michael Dokes with ease. Was able to survive and ultimately outslug a hungry Bonecrusher too (Bonecrusher had Joe Frazier in his corner!), not an easy task.

    9. Mike Weaver. Was consistent through the era, a tough come forward banger who didn't relent.

    9. It's a cop out but I can't rank Dokes below Weaver....Dokes handspeed was supernatural. Even overweight and years past his title reign he gave a young Holyfield a lesson in heavyweight boxing.

It's going to be hard ranking the rest....Cats like Douglas and Tucker looked awesome sometimes but other criteria is needed as well. plan on doing it though since i hae nothing left to do high for the next two days

The Mercer fight later on really showed what he was capable of before disaster struck.

I have a feeling it's going to be poor old Frank at the last spot of my list  Really deep era and one I got interested in since I'm a Tyson fan ;). These heavyweights knew how to box, but they also knew how to eat and shoot up too..really sad
