Who is greater,Hopkins or Hagler?

Hopkins appears greater with his 20 defenses, going through the weights and remaining competitive at 45. It's impressive stuff.

However Hagler was simply a better, more complete fighter and he fought better fighters. Hopkins just couldn't do it like Hagler could. For me Marvelous Marv is the epitome of middleweight world champion.

Even my mother has heard of Marvin Hagler. She hasn't got a clue who Hopkins is.

 

Hagler holds the better wins. But I take into account that Hopkins should have got the nod in some close fights (Jermain Taylor 2x, Calzaghe)* and I look at the longevity aspect. Hopkins is 46 year old, and that should be considered. Hopkins is becoming a legend in his own right, just like Hagler is - if Hopkins beats Pascal convincingly this saturday, it must be looked upon as a great win, even if Pascal isn't great.

*I had SRL up by 1 round against Hagler, and I wish it wasn't so, since I admire Hagler but don't really like SRL

Is close. I know people doesn't like to question classic boxers but Bhop did fight a lot of big names, broke a record, and multi weight division champ and still trucking at an advance age. Seems like he got a stack of accomplishments.

 

Hopkins couldn't carry Hagler's jockstrap. Hagler by brutally dominant late stoppage.

 

It's not about who's the best, but who's the greatest. There's a difference there.

I think history will look very kindly on Hopkins once he has retired.

Hagler beat the greater fighters, Hagler was exciting, thrilling to watch. BHop is a Spoiler type fighter who comes to hold, Juke and disrupt tempo, make things ugly. He is best against stiff ****s, who rely on landing a power shot but who lack coordinated smooth movement. He can easily be beat by a guy with a chin and workrate. Just make Bhop have to work at pace not comfortable for him and he gasses and fades in the mid to late rds.

Hey for me Calzaghe was yesterdays Alan Minter and look what Hagler did to him. Hagler went in there with Brutes like Mugabi and beat these cats into submission at their own game he had the offensive strength to engage in shootuts with anyone and win but he could box as well. Hagler is the greater fighter.

 

I like Marvin more. Hopkins handpicked his best opponents. Marvin fought in a tougher era and time and was more dominant with this southpaw stance and long reach 75 inches. Hopkins benefits from so many champions now. He handpicked Pascal as he has handpicked everyone since Trinidad.

 

I think as a middleweight champion, Hagler's resume and legacy at 160 based on the competition he fought is better than Bernard's... but what Bernard has done since moving up in weight and in his 40's, IMO puts him over Hagler in the ATG ratings.

 

I really don't know how anyone can have Hopkins over Hagler, it's astounding.

 

IMO it's the Marvelous One. But there is no doubting Hopkins' greatness - BHOP is a true throwback and an ATG.

 

Don't judge Marv by the Leonard fight, he was showing the effects of all those tough fights he had over the decades.
Hagler had much tougher competition than did Hopkins.
No doubt, the Hopkins that kayoed Joe Lipsey was a tough, incredibly skilled boxer. A fight with the Hagler that fought Alan Minter or Thomas Hearns would have been a classic. But Hagler would have prevailed , make no mistake.
Hagler would have ultimately outworked Bernie, especially if the fight were for 15 rounds.
