I got a beef with Tyson. Tyson would have a real problem with Liston and he admitted it himself in the late 80s when asked how he would deal with a number of former HW champs. Tyson is a front runner who doesn't fight well backing up. Holyfield knew this and so fought him aggressively and backed him up. Liston -the 1959/60 prime version could be counted on to do exactly that. Both have great chins but Cleveland Williams proved how solid Liston's was. And Tyson's speed won't be nearly as much of a factor when he's being moved backwards. I see Tyson beginning to fall apart after round 8 or so -and if those is scheduled for 15, Mike ain't making it.

Liston was a man of, ahem, notoriously vicious and intemperate disposition and an all around bad character -but he wasn't a "bully" unless we want to believe that Angelo Dundee lives atop Mt. Sinai (not that you made this point, but someone did). Dundee said that Duran was a bully too. Dundee liked narratives for his boys, and if he could juice them up, he would.

But Dundee was right about anyone being able to lick another man.

Anyway, I would like a reference to Tyson speaking about Liston giving him trouble. I'm curious, and never have heard of this.

I think Holyfield's a good counter-puncher, and when he backed Tyson up he did so intently in a way I'd never see Liston doing so. Not because Liston couldn't, but because Holyfield wanted to walk Tyson back, not just to tire him and show he could be stand up and be a boss in the center of the ring, but to psychologically frustrate him mentally. Liston was a whole lot more measured. Insane how comfortable he could show himself in the ring when he was confident that is, while also still being such a brute. Tyson was more of a nerve fueled ferocious engine that wanted you dead. I don't see Liston back him up, in fact I see him losing confidence as Tyson slips the jab and busts him up on the inside. Liston had power, but if there was ever a legitimate criticism about his attributes besides the "gutless coward" or "no heart" talk which is valid to a degree but sensationalized, it was that he was a little ponderous.

Dundee's fairly tales seem so much more in accord to reality when Liston quit on his stool. And not quitting on his stool like Jess Williard, but quitting in a fight that wasn't a whitewash. The second fight, more or less lives up to his reputation as some mob enforcer that lacked character. Either that, or he actually did get knocked out in the 1st round by Muhammad Ali. Not a great tale either way. I tend to think keenly on Marciano's assessment of Liston's psyche and character. But then again, nobody likes the villian or anti-hero except for in the movies... so maybe I'm just buying too much into it.

 

Yeah, not a great matchup for Bowe in my view but again, I wanted to her Kal's take on it seen he favored Bowe. I know your take Muchmoore.

This thread, these opinions, this is what makes liston great imo. He had a very good heavyweight resume, not top ten but very good... It's his h2h destructiveness that makes him a top 8 atg heavyweight imo

Sounds interesting! I'd like to know how he thinks he'd fair against Frazier and Marciano. Many people believe he'd be all wrong for their styles but im not so sure he would
