Who's the greater fighter, p4p? Ketchel or Marciano?

    Who's the greater fighter, p4p? Ketchel or Marciano?
    Stanley Ketchel or Rocky Marciano? Who do you consider greater, p4p? Also, is it close for you? Why/why not?

    I'd say marciano but only because ketchel was taken from us and we'll never know how great he could have been

    Both these guys are elite pound-for-pound greats, IMO. Up there with the very best.
    Personally I'd put Ketchel above Marciano.

    I'd say Marciano ... he was more dominant and I believe he fought a better grade of fighter ... there are only a handful for 180 - 190 pound guys I'd pick over Rocky , maybe, while Ketchel, however courageous and ferocious, to me rates a bit lower ...

    Dominant over what though? Ketchel was dominant over, I think, one of the strongest MW divisions ever, Marciano was dominant over a middling HW division.

    Ketchel lost to one MW in his entire career and Papke was one of the best fighters of his time, arguably great in his own right, and Ketchel beat him three times.

    Jack Sullivan, Mike Sullivan, Papkex3, Lewis, O'Brien, Thomas x3, Kelly is as superb a top end MW resume as exists.

    I don't think Marciano is in the same class frankly, though he's undeniably great.

    That's a bit of a push. Marciano is arguably one of the most dominant champs in ring history. 11-0 with 10 knockouts against Ring Magazine top 10, knocked out every rated contender he ever faced, 6-0 with 5 knockouts against hall of famers. He beat the old greats, and beat the young studs too.

    Ketchel was great but for 28 more lbs who is near Marciano

    I hear you there, but this gets said to often IMO.

    Marciano is at what has ended up being a weird, in-between weight. If he weighed 200lbs for example, a person could answer Frazier, Holyfield, Louis, Dempsey, if he weighed 175 we could answer Foster, Conn, Spinks, Charles (!), possibly.

    Although of course were he a flyweight or a middleweight, Marciano is hell for anyone.

    So yeah, he might be the best ever at his weight, but who all weighed in at his weight?

    Does that make sense?

    Furthermore, I think Langford has a good shot at Rocky, weighing about the same or slightly less.

    I think most people will consider that reasonable...maybe not the fact that I think Conn has a shot also.

    Dempsey often weighed about the same as Marciano, about 188 pounds.
    Langford even less. I'd give them both at least a 50-50 chance, prime for prime.
    Holyfield at 188 would have given them all a good argument, I reckon.

    All four would be high on my pound-for-pound list.
    Still, Ketchel would possibly top them all.
    How many would beat Stanley at 150 ?
