Excellent build up opening thread :good The ultra fit Cleverly establishes a lighting fast pace from the start and immediatley finds a home for his jab , the under prepared Bellew is looking to find rythym and land the occasional power shot but is being outworked and out boxed . Cleverly takes rounds 1 - 4 by pure workrate and Bellew hasnt landed much of note . Bellew is beginning to tire and Cleverly starts to land combinations at regular intervals . Bellew has no answer to Cleverly's swarming work rate and combinations and begins to head hunt as desperation sets in , Cleverly is landing 4 - 5 - 6 punch combo's without reply and the ref halts the action in round 8 .................
If this is addressed to Beeston, he said he faded late, not that he wasn't impressed. Which is true, he was all bombast early and then his output went down, drastically as the fight went on. Also, Murat, despite the hype, was like a lesser Arthur Abraham with no power. That win is being massively overrated IMO, dsepite Clevs quality showing. Then again that might be addressed to Eubank, if so, sorry :good
They probaly both overrated. Cleverly is average. Bellew has more edge to him - but has some sloppy flaws and pro inexperience. But I think Bellew can rough Clev up - draw him into a macho type war - and knock Clev out.
Against Murat he leaned in with his head, if he does that he's getting knocked out. For me this all depends on Bellews weight. If he does it ok and feels good I can see him getting the stoppage. Nathan doesn't have the power to get himself out of trouble and he hasn't faught someone that punches as hard as bellew. I always felt Bellew had the style to beat nathan in an evenly match fight, just depends how the weight has gone. If it goes past the midway stage you've got to think its Nathans.
It wouldn't surprise me if Bellew had been told to put himself on stand-by just in case, or decided to do so himself if the call came. Like most high output fighters, Cleverly looks better if the opponent stands in front of him like Murat did - Flea's assessment of him being an Abraham without power is pretty accurate. Bellew has better footwork and a harder dig with both hands. Fundamentally he's all there, he just tends to lose his cool and wants to score a first round KO every time he's in the ring. If he can keep his composure and not gas out.... he's definitely in with a chance in this one. If he didn't fancy his chances he'd have passed and waited in line. Trotter makes a good point too that Clev might be a little flat.
its a suicide mission for bellew, but for the fans its gonna be exciting while it last.big respect must go to bellew for taken the fight at short notice .
people seem to be slating Cleverlys defence. Bellew is not exactly Pernell Whitacker. If it turns into a gun fight Clev comes out in top.
Anyways, Clev stoppage in about five rounds. He'll take a few rounds to get warmed up, will land a nice right, drop Tony, and will follow up with a barrage and the ref will stop it, probably having been told beforehand to watch out for Tony as he's struggled to make the weight. I won't believe this fight is actually happening until after the weigh in. Don't see why Clev takes the cut easier and they don't meet at say, 180 or 185. The fans are still happy, and the purists know that the belt means **** all anyway. In a lot of other eras with same day weigh ins these guys would be decent sized Heavys, no reason to drain. Unless of course, Clev is happy to fight Kenny Anderson as a replacement, I reckon he'll want Bellew now as he has a good opponent to take his frsutrations out on, have a tear up with and look good against. Bellew has a slim punchers chance and that's it IMO, Clev has shown a decent chin so far and Bellew is sporadically accurate enough to do damage, a decent puncher, but no Archie Moore in the pure power department ;-) Though I'll be rooting for Tony all the way :good
I don't really see where Bellews good foot work and fundementally all there stuff comes from. I have not seen it in any off his fights??? Murat is 5x the fighter Bellew has shown himself to be. He will gas out though. 3 days proper training. Theres no way he doesn't gas.
All the signs point towards a Clev stoppage I think. Tony is underprepared and has been killing himself to make weight the past couple of fights, which has resulted in him tasting the canvas a few times. I'd ****ing love for him to come through mind you, but I just can't see him being able to comete with Clev given the circumstances. I do think he could potentially have a future at world level at Cruiserweight.
The purists is only 5% of the Audience though. Bellew said yesterday he is already at 181. I don't think weight is the issue its the fitness that comes from 10 weeks hard training.
