Could Joe Calzaghe even make it the distance with a prime Roy Jones?

calzaghe wasnt prime when he fought RJJ people always overlook that fact. His hands were completley shot, a prime Joe had knockout power and would have also landed clean on RJJ glass jaw and ****ing shattered it.

RJJ fought bums for amazing paydays but that also gets overlooked by people blinded by hatred for Calzaghe.RJJ was an amazing boxer and great athlete but lets not forget Joe had an iron chin, great power and speed and also threw amazing combinations. This fight could go either way.

unless your american and in that case Joe would be out cold within 30 seconds.

But Jones was a harder hitter than Mitchell or Kessler, and a much, much, much better fighter than Mitchell or Kessler, so not only would he hit Joe harder than either of them did but he'd hit him a lot more often as well.

Montell Griffin took Jones into deep waters, and Jones responded by turning the fight around before the DQ. That was prime Jones though, not the shell of the mid 2000s.

Perhaps Jones could do an open gym session for all his nuthuggers on ESB.He could work the heavy bag with his dazzling hand speed and silky moves, and they could all sit there tugging, and cooing. LMAO

    ^This to an undeniable extent.

RJJ wasn't the greatest that ever lived and there will be better fighters inevitably in the future.

But, in the (humorous) attempted comparative of JC with RJJ in his prime ...
Joe had no head movement, no elusiveness, no power, poor technique, far less speed, negligible quickness, poor reactive attributes, and zero chance. Joe would get hit repeatedly by punches he couldn't see coming and would have absolutely no chance of avoiding any of them from landing cleanly and knocking him out ****ing cold if he kept coming forward. He would either get discouraged and give up the initiative and just try to survive for 12 or he would walk into a series of clean shots and get separated from his senses and stopped by a barrage of punches that he couldn't see or defend against.

At Joe's level you can fight bums and so-so athletes and seem decent (though not always impressive) ... but you can't fight superior athletes in their prime and survive when you are obviously less gifted and talented. He never fought any because the man understood his limitations. The tough war he had to go through with a weight dropping CE gave him enough of a scare to spend the next decade only focused upon the weakest and even then - when it counted on a big stage - he still struggled over twelve rounds to create any distance or dominance over limp wristed non-athletic semi-bum like David Starie (see Andy Lee for a next generation version - lol) or had fights where he got dropped by a no-talent like Kabary Salem.

Joe was a good fighter. He wasn't an extraordinary athlete nor armed with enough to prevent himself from taking more punishment than he could deliver against someone more talented. Joe was fine (with a VERY narrow edge) as long as the measuring stick were guys like Kessler, Reid, Sheika, Starie, Delaney, etc. - men who were similar - more or less - and didn't hold any athletic edge over him. I'm sure he would have been fine in the ring with Ottke, Froch, & Pavlk as well. Obviously none of these fighters (including JC) are anywhere close to being considered ATGs (though Ottke too was undefeated and a long reigning champion) - unless you're a young compatriot overly desperate for a like-kind hero and set on avoiding any measure of objectivity.

If Joe had ACTUALLY met prime versions of higher end athletes and dominated them there would be no argument. But it never happened. And, it never could have. Fifteen years and 46 fights and there were few fights of substance. Some men know they are great and seek out the best. Others will be forever dependent upon a few kids from their homeland touting their attributes while the world laughs derisively or ignores them completely (as the US has - and we are as supportive as any place could be on the globe due to our historical and ancestral ties). Any argument is weakened to support Joe's standing if an effort is made to denigrate those that are clearly more gifted and substantive.

That was Jones forearm smashing into Calzaghe's chin. Watch the video. If the referee had seen it clearly Joe would have gotten 5 minutes to recover. It was not a punch. Nothing padded by gloves made any impression on Calzaghe in that fight.

I would favour Roy by UD. Fairly comfortably.

I seriously doubt that he would have got the KO. Calzaghe was too durable.

I would also consider it possible that prime Calzaghe's style might have befuddled Roy to the point where Joe could have gotten the decision.

    Possible, but unlikely.

Finally, if there was to be a KO, IMO, it would be more likely that Roy got stopped than Joe.

I can't see Jones stopping Calzaghe. Calzaghe's chin has always been good. The punch that Mitchell hit him with that dropped him was huge and twisted his head all the way round, yet Calzaghe got quickly back up and dropped him. Jones would probably catch Calzaghe with something he doesn't see and drop him but he couldn't keep Joe down. Calzaghe's ability to recover so quickly once hurt is remarkable.

Also Jones was known as "Reluctant Roy" for a reason, he all to often cruised to a points win if he couldn't stop his opponent early. Jones also didn't like to trade he preferred to counter, so with Calzaghe's incessant workrate we would see a more defensive minded Jones. Jones would no doubt win but he simply wouldn't be aggressive enough to force a stoppage.
