I really don't understand why people are moaning about the weight. If Pacquiao was the sort of welterweight who enters the ring well over 160lbs, people would have every right to complain but he doesn't. He makes the weight, usually a few pounds under 147, and comes into the ring at that same weight. Against Katsidis, Marquez weighed 145lbs too - The exact same weight as Pacquiao against Mosley. They may fight two weight divisions apart but that is only because Pacquiao chooses not to cut weight any more. He could still fight at lightweight, I'm sure, and certainly light welter. If they weighed in at 135lbs, they'd both be in the ring at 145lbs If they weighed in at 140lbs, they'd both be in the ring at 145lbs If they weighed in at 144lbs, they'd both be in the ring at 145lbs They were the same size years ago and they're the same size now. The fact Pacquiao fights at welterweight and Marquez fights at lightweight, doesn't mean Pacquiao is bigger. In the ring, they will weigh the same. Either exactly the same or an irrelevant pound of two difference, possibly even favouring Marquez. If you don't think Marquez has a chance, that's because he isn't good enough. He is not, however, too small to beat Pacquiao. They are the same size.
So...are you saying Marquez has big bones or something at that makes the fight unfair? This is Marquez at 145lbs: This content is protected This content is protected He is not smaller than Pacquiao.
I made the same thread a few days ago Jack - maybe i'm being a bit naive, but I really think JMM haw a great chance in this fight. It's all about styles, and Marquez has a style that gives Manny fits.
Nah, I think you're spot on. Marquez's style always has, and always will, give Pacquiao problems. The fact people are talking about size to discredit this fight is strange because the only weight which matters, it's the weight the fighters are on fight night. What they weigh in at is irrelevant. Both men are 144-146lbs on fight night, so there's no advantage. Like I said, Marquez could actually be the bigger man on fight night. The difference is so minimal though, I don't think it really matters. They may be exactly the same or one may have a pound or two advantage, but given that these are two elite fighters, it doesn't really make a difference. The sole reason for these doubters who say Marquez is too small, must surely be because of the Mayweather fight? But they have to remember that Marquez wasn't fighting a welter that night, he was fighting someone who weighed over 160lbs. Pacquiao won't be close to that.
There are a lot of people, Jack, who don't understand this for some reason. The concept seems so utterly simple to me. Even Paulie Malignaggi - a professional boxer - has wondered how Pacquiao was able to put on 17lbs of muscle and jump from 130 to 147 in a couple years... atsch But just so you know, Pacquiao has been ~148 consistently on fight night since moving up from lightweight, not 145. Not that it makes a significant difference.
Yeah, I think it's strange. People are more concerned about what weight fighters weigh in at, rather than their weight on fight night. I don't know how they can defend that - Simply, what is the most important weight? The one where fighters are often horrifically drained or when they are fully rehydrated, strong and in the ring ready to fight? The only weight which matters is the one when these guys step into the ring. Everything else is irrelevant.
They aren't really the same size anymore in my opinion. Pac has weighed 144-145 for his last 4 fights, JMM has come in under 135 for his last 2, 142 against Floyd and he looked awful. Weight in the ring may be the same, but strength will not be at all. Pac is naturally carrying himself around his fighting weight, JMM is not, if he comes in at 144 its not his fighting weight, its ten pounds over his best weight, which he is not used to carrying and it really slows him down as we saw in the Floyd fight. Pac at 144 is all muscle and he has looked good in that body and fast. Not to mention JMM is not getting any better, he peaked a few years ago. Now Pac has developed a more all around game, JMM doesn't just have to look for the straight left anymore, he has much more to worry about aside from the size and strength difference. Manny is going to be fast and powerful in there and I don't think JMM can handle that now, even Katsidis was giving him some trouble, and Kat is not even close to pac's level. But at the end of the day, this fight is the only one that makes sense right now given the fued of promoters and Floyd sitting idle. I hope its a great fight, but I'm not counting on it.
they are about the same size... jmm goes 145-146 lbs. during fights while pac comes in @148-149. the difference is that pac has been gotten used to fighting big 160-lb guys for the past 2.5 years. it will be a welcome change for pac to finally go back to fighting guys at or near his size. we know that pac was able to hurt these big 160+ lb guys as well as absorb their big punches. that therefore doesn't auger well for the 146-lb jmm in their 3rd fight.
I don't think that's entirely accurate. Although I do understand your point. There is a diiference between fight weight and walking around weight. Although they may be at similar weights from time to time, the fact of the matter is that Pac has entered the ring at 147 & 148 so he's considerably more comfortable fighting at the higher weight. JMM fought Floyd at about 144lbs which is quite heavy for him. 138lbs entiring the ring against Katsidas. So Pac fights bigger guys at a heavier weights so in this sport he is the bigger guy!
:yep Fact is....they have the same build and frame but due to PAC competing at the higher weights for the last few years, his body has gotten accustomed to the weight, it's had time to acclimate and fill out properly with the help of his strength and conditioning preparations. JMM's last couple of fights have been at 135.....if he was planning on a PAC fight I would have liked to see him fight a few fights at 140 or above so he'd have more time to adjust physically to the added weight. Fact is he'll be just as bad off as he was in the Floyd fight. Too much muscle and wieght he's not use to carrying will slow him down, tire him out and make him less mobile.
I made a thread about this fight and suggested that Marquez had more success against Pac at the lower weights where they fought before because Pacquiao was drained, and that Manny performs a lot better now that he doesn't have to really make any effort at all to make weight - even if this requires him to fight opponents who are significantly bigger than he is. I was called a *******. As evidence that Pacquiao has been adversely affected by weight drain in the past, I brought up the fact that Pacquiao's two KO losses both happened when he was so dehydrated that he was physically unable to make weight, going so far as trying to spit in a cup to shed the final pound. In fact, he had so outgrown the flyweight division in his second loss than he jumped THREE weight classes immediately after the fight. I was told that Pacquiao was a cheater and should be condemned the same as Mayweather for what he did to JMM...and called a *******.
Marquez was 145 against Katsidis. Watch this video for about 30 seconds before you attempt to argue this: [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5eywHrPOJdE[/ame]
