i agree when the chamber is empty thats that, but roy fights for himself and for the love of it.....he knws he's not what he was, he just loves to compete even though he's not really competing.....

hard to explain.

 

Unfortunately in boxing the evidence and consequences of not hanging them up is a lot more brutal, damaging and obvious that other sports imo :-(

 

defo.....id never question any fighters desire to keep going......

stupid, yeah but i cant question it.....its their life.

let them live it how they want......

pay for the actions later in life if you get that far.

I'm afraid you're right, but I hope if he does get stopped then he finally packs it in. It was bad enough watching him lose to Green but against a bigger man, a bigger puncher and a much more relevant fighter he'll be lucky if he doesn't leave the ring on a stretcher.

strange how roy has aged so badly....what do guys think has aged him? genetics? or boxing.

 

Dropping weight too fast after the Ruiz fight. His legs, always the thing that allowed him to go about his work so spectacular, and the most important attribute he possesed, left him and he lost the base for all the other awe inspiring facets of his game to flourish. His still seemed to have fairly good reflexes, but that weight drop caused his reflexes to decline very sharply or for him to be finished as a fighter just a year or so after his big milestone.

The first Tarver fight was the obvious indication that he wasn't the same fighter. He should've got out then. The 2nd Tarver fight should've proved to him it was time to go.

This should've caused him to get his friends and family to get him institutionaised should be hope to return to the ring.

I really hope not, hopefully he'll get stopped early and that'll be that.

 

In some ways I do have some sort of twisted admiration for Roy.

When you think how easy he basically had it all of his career because of his athletic and physical superiority over all of his opponents where he mostly fought in his home state of Florida he had everything stacked in his favour.

After the Tarver loss he started to lose all that and now that he has lost all his physical advantages he still wants to get into the ring with bigger men and will now travel to do it. Whereas before he could basically do what he wanted to his opponent he now goes into a fight knowing there is more than a good chance he will get not only beaten but stopped.

 

He should have stayed at cruiserweight after the Ruiz fight, but it was a difficult position because a) not much money to be made, unlike at LHW and b) he weighed in at 193lbs vs Ruiz and probably didn't rehydrate much, so would have been a lot smaller than the cruiserweights.

 

I agree that's what he should've done but it was no issue against a bigger guy in Ruiz so don't see why it would've been a problem. It was just a bad idea, probably caused by Tarvers trash talking as much as anything. Roy let his fighting pride get in the way. Even this close to the event, nowadays Roy could've got a catchweight for himself. But he was the main man at 175 for years, and obviously felt the need to reaffirm that.

Who was at Cruiser around that time? :good

 

Sad that only when he became shot did Jones step up to face anyone, anywhere. Lebedev would have been dominated 10 years ago.

 

Ruiz... well he wasn't exactly amazing. But the top cruiserweights might have created some problems (I don't know if there were any good ones at the time, I wasn't interested in boxing back then), but it was better than to drop 18lbs (and then 23lbs vs Trinidad). I actually watched the post-fight analysis vs Ruiz today, the commentators were talking about Chris Byrd. He would have had a good chance there, imagine an LHW unifying (sort of) the heavyweight division.

Well, Lebedev was only 2-0 10 years ago.
