its bizarre alright. Best fans in the world hey. I mean the media is partly to blame, definitely, but so many of our boxers are fully unknown outside the likes of people who trawl the forums or attend the fights, or are involved themselves. Try convincing an editor to carry a few hundred words on someone they haven't much of, its quite the task. And with nowt on rte for the year, what a setback. But, like the lads said, next year the frequency of katie taylors bowel movements will be public knowledge for about two weeks. Still, looking.forward to the weeks and months ahead in the short term so its not all bad.

Irish people absolutely love to knock their own when it comes to sport! I was working one day (in a local pub) and Ireland got a draw against australia in rugby when brian o driscoll got a last minute try. Now i know he is a leinster player, and munster fans are entitled to dislike him when it comes to the rivalry there, but these same fellas who were cheering ireland for the match (munster fans) were very pissed off when he got the try....saying stuff like "oh jesus, rte will give him all the praise now"...you would swear they would have rathered ireland to lose! When Dunne lost both times many of them claimed "i told you he had a glass jaw", simply cos they probably saw it quoted in sum shitty tabloid. These are the same ****in fools who ye mentioned that are probably constantly glued to sky sports news, etc.!!
it cant all be blamed on the fans though. How are they supposed to know who any of our fighters are? RTE dont mention boxing, nor tv3 and theres shag all in the papers. A lot of this comes back and lands at the promoters feet. Its their responsibility to make fighters known and theyre not doing it. The only Irish media outlet that seems open to boxing is off the ball on newstalk and theyre getting Hopkins on more than Irish lads for one simple reason. Bernard Hopkins is a great self promoter and entertains when he talks. Most Irish fighters now do not and are lacking charisma. They need to make more of an effort too
Live results as they happen at the O2 I'll be getting in the doors first thing as there is a fight I am interested in at the beginning of the show so I will tweet all the results for those too eager to wait. http://twitter.com/#!/LoveIrishBoxing monster card http://boxrec.com/show_display.php?show_id=615776

Eamon O'Kane is making his pro debut on Stephen Haughian's card in Craigavon, Jamie Conlan is on the card and a couple of pro debuts. Should be a good night of boxing. For tickets call: 077-77777777
I believe O'Kane makes his debut on Rees/Murray bill, but Eamonn's appearance in Craigavon can only add to an already exciting card.
In fairness to some papers they have started to publish more boxing. The Mirror had previews and reviews of Jamie Conlan last week. Also other lesser known lads like had Jamie Kavanagh next fight this week, Spike today and have had Luke Wilton, Anto Fitz etc over. Averaging 5 boxing stories a week- ok not back page or page leads but still news. I see RTE radio, off the ball etc and other media outlets are giving boxing more exposure
I must agree, the coverage in The Mirror has been excellent of late. Keep up the good work Jonny. On another note the DeGale/Groves contest is getting the sort of coverage that can only create more interest among the sport. But there was a debate within Boxing News this week, is the PPV hurting the sport. One can argue that without it the big fights can't be made. The opposing argument is only a few will actually fork out the subscription, so far less will see it. I'm old school, in that I think terrestrial tv [ as back in the good old days] is where we want to get back to. RTE have shown in terms of Irish boxing there is a big interest with the Peters shows doing well in the viewing figures, I believe that would be the same in Britain and the US. What do you lads think?
I think terrestial TV i.e. ITV for example, should look at what Showtime/CBS have done with boxing recently. They have got Pacman and hype it on terrestial tv (CBS) - to the whole television audience, not just the cable subscribers. They fed into that with the Fight Camp 360 and create a lot more interest. Realistically, this model could generate more advertising revenue and PPV buys and there would be absolutely no excuses for a promoter to not put on packed PPV events and for ITV to create a budget for Friday Fight Night domestic cards in Ireland and UK. Well, I can always have my pipe dream! If ITV dipped their toes back in boxing, there is great potential to trump what Sky do because of the audience reach they have. That is the only way I can see a UK terrestial broadcaster entering the market. As for RTE, they need another Bernard Dunne to capture imagination of the public before they will pile into boxing again. I would like them to be running Peters show now, but I cant see it. It was a struggle to get Dunne on RTE in the beginning, so things look bleak at the moment. As it is Sky have struggled to enforce tight quality control on the PPV cards, there should be a good 4 evenly matched events from the day it is announced a PPV. They are just milking it with too much with bull**** cards. Still, it is good see some small hall shows in Craigavon, Belfast and Galway - it is important to support these shows until we get boxing back on RTE.
thanks lads- no harm in mailing the mirror to compliment them! might persuade them to run more!!! but its the editor and assistant editor there they have got on board and tried to support boxing were they can. Also the boxers have been giving us alot more to write about
