James DeGale: How would you manage him from this point onwards?

What would you say to him?

He has talent but that needs to be developed in the right manner with the right training and sparring.

Trainer Change or Keep?

Definate trainer change, can't imagine why that little nutter was given the right to train as bright a prospect as Degale, frankly stupid. How about Sweat Pea Whitaker, that would be a logical step forward and would get the best out of Degales strong points.

Stay Home or Stateside for Fights/Training?

Go stateside and germany, why not let his talent develop in a less pressurised environment.

At least a US coach will ensure he punches correctly. Like nazim Richardson said Calzaghe is a top fighter but he would never be taught/allowed to punch like that in any US gym.

Would be good for degale to go over there and reinvent himself or at least build on what he's got. He can certainly afford it, but I think his ego will prevent him from making the move. Khan had to be humiliated for him to go, degale lost a super razor-sharp decision and the major reason for the loss was his team got out thought by Adam booth. Just swap trainers and most likely degale would've won. So he might think such a drastic change is not neccessasry.

 

I agree with what Richardson said, but the thing with Joe is, I kinda feel it helped Calzaghe somewhat, as when you dont turn all your weight into the punch, you can throw quicker clusters of punches, as your not getting full range of motion into the punches, and having to wait for the punch to travel across your body, that means you can appear faster than what you actually are, and it can make it difficult for someone, when they're trying to counter inbetween those punches, as they cant always find that transition from defense to offense, simply cause you can put your punches together quicker that way.

Take Amir Khan, look how square he fights with his hands out infront, that means his right hand doesn't have to travel across his body the way it ordinarily would for the average fighter who stands side, meaning he can get to the target quicker when he throws combos, and if he's not looking to throw hard, he can be even quicker.

Double edged sword when fight the way Amir does though, as because he doesn't get full range of motion into the right, he loses power on the punch. Watch how side on Roger Mayweather was with his right hand, and look how devastating it was, he almost hid it from the opponent.

 

I've never liked DeGale. I think he's a moderate talent based on what he's done in the ring. And everyone jumped all over his nutsack because he beat Paul ****ing Smith!

Crazy. The disrespect he paid Groves, as well as many of the posters on here, has just made me glad he got beaten. But the excuse-making after it has made it clear to me how limited he really is.

If Groves is so limited, then how come he so easily had DeGale baffled for six rounds? And if DeGale is so talented then how come he couldn't figure Groves out?

Still, I'm not trying to come across harshly. But I genuinely have no time for DeGale. He acted like an idiot, making big claims. And all these armchair psychologists said Groves was weak and struggling. Actually it was the other way round.

I just think Groves deserves a lot more praise for how he exposed DeGale's limits.

 

James is still a fantastic talent that can go to the top.
I dont think DeGale should change trainers as he seems to have a good relationship with his, just think he needs to learn some new things like cutting off the ring, using his jab more and fighting on his toes. Things only get noticed when a fighter loses or struggles and maybe George learnt alot more from his tough fight with Anderson than what Degale did when dazzling against Smith.
I wouldnt be surprised if Warren took Degale down the international route now to build him up and have him fighting some past their best fighters on the way down building to a fight with someone like Bika to get a world rating and then looking for a title shot if all goes well, and Im sure it will

 

I had Groves winning 115-113. Knowing DeGale was better if you went towards him, I think it was a well executed gameplan.
