Beibut Shumenov has not had many fights, but has wins over faded contenders Montell Griffin, Byron Mitchell and William Joppy, as well as two close wins over Campillo (first one in particular is very controversial) and a ominant win over undefeated Uzelkov. He's fair aggressive, an amateur standout, who fights at a moderate pace and deals with straight punches. He's supposed to have a fair dig with his sharp right hand but I've seen little evidence, then again I've struggled to get footage of his most interesting fights. Clev will fight a complete bum next, it's a certainty. I'd love to see Clev in with Shumenov, it's a winnable fight from what I've seen of Shumenov (not a great deal) and a solid fight to help Nathan learn and improve - which is badly needed.
the funny thing about the campillo fights is that many felt shumenov won the 1st but lost the 2nd, but the decisions were reversed. first off i don't see any reason for either man to fight. rack up a couple of defences against decent oppo, build names outside there own country and then its a big fight. i am happy to see cleverly box guys in the top 10-15 for a few years. in terms of the actual fight, both cause each other problems. its a 50-50 would favour the man with home advantage.
I see Clev winning this on workrate. Shumenov, like you said, is solid. However he doesn't excell enough in the areas which I think would give Cleverly trouble, which are hard accurate punching, good in and out movement, good defense and counter punching ability. Shumenov is a good mid-range fighter with a decent jab and he is better at putting shots together than he used to be, but the variety isn't really there too much. I do however think he is good at reading opponents and adapting. Watching his fight with Uzelkov, I thought he looked sharp, accurate, and he held a good guard. He kept the dangerous Uzelkov at bay, and neutralised his left hook with decent movement. It was a class performance against a tough challenger. I think some of the 'shine' is taken away from that win by the fact that Uzelkov apparently had to starve himself before the fight due to his nutritionist not being able to get a permit to enter the US (although I don't know the whole story). Shumenov is a decent fighter, but he was very fortunate to get a title, and whilst solid, hsi attributes are decidedly basic. I think Clev just outworks him, taking some hard counters along the way and dropping a round here or there, but snatching the decision by a fairy comfortable margin. Like you said, you can't knock Shumenov's attitude!

Shumenov is not an especially powerful puncher imo reaally unless you get too close to him inside. To be fair he cuts off a ring quite well but his attacks are very basic; slow and single shots in general. Campillo was robbed shockingly in the rematch, he clearly outboxed him and showed a good blueprint of how to beat him. Cleverly's volume punching should see him win a decision but he should be wary of getting too close on the inside, Shumenov's short right hand is perhaps his best punch. If Cleverly stayed disciplined and fought a.l.a Froch vs Abraham it would be a pretty easy nights work for him. Pretty big if with Cleverly at the moment though
Well there you are then :good I chased the first fight for a bit then lost interest. Have seen a few rounds of it. The 2nd one passed me by I guess. Who has Shumenov got next? He wassupposed to fight Braehmer when he fought Joppy wasn't he? Who are his options?
