"Of course hype and bravado are a pivotal part of the boxing fabric. Frankie Gavin keeps calling me out and be careful what you wish for young lad you might just get it. I have watched only two of Frankies fights and he hasnt impressed me. But having said that, Prizefighter winner Michael Lomax and former British Champion Young Mutley should be ashamed of the performances they offered against him. They seem like they just turned up for a pay cheque. I have fought all over the world and beaten world-class fighters on their promoters show, so if Frankie and I were to fight in the future on a Frank Warren show, I am very sure I would beat him. But at this minute in time I am not looking behind me, I am looking in front and fighting the European or any world champion is my focus. Frankie can get to the back of the queue as I have a voluntary fight due and then the winner of the Steve Williams v Nigel Wright fight who are due to battle it out for the mandatory spot. I will defend my British title three times to win the Lonsdale belt outright then move on. Frankie called me out on Sky Sports during his interview and then Frank Warren TV interviewed us after he was finished with Sky Sports. But Frankies fight against Young Mutley was a snooze fest he needs to add some flair to his game as right now as he is boring to watch. He has nothing to bring to the table and I have no desire to fight him until he wins a world or European title." http://www.*****.net/2011/05/ashley-theophane-on-cleverly-and-groves.html
Got to agree with the guy. u cant go calling guys out after a performance like that. That was one of the worse fights i have seen.
Theopane is an idiot for taking the approach he is. It should be him wanting to make the Gavin fight in order to make some money out of it. His current approach will lead Warren to just bypass him, he'll lose his belt further down the line against someone else, for far less money and he'll look back and regret screwing up the one opportunity he had for some limelight and good money.
I can see his point. Just because Gavin is a talented young kid doesn't mean that Theophane has to dance to Warren's tune and take the fight. As he says, the board have ordered an eliminator and he intends to fight the winner of that. Fair do's. I don't think Frankie did himself any favours with his post-fight comment about money. Theophane would be well within his rights to demand the same as Gavin gets, and unless the board make Gavin the mandatory he's free to do as he likes. If they were to get it on I do think Gavin would beat him.... but Theophane seems a sensible kid who's come up the hard way and is determined to make the most of his new found title.
The fight might have been bland but if Theopane is really as confident as he says he is then he should take a fight with Gavin. I don't think Gavin is a 'step back' for Theopane. A win over Gavin could only fastrack Theopane's career.
Lets see what happens when this kid (Gavin) FINALLY faces a live opponent and not a FW set-up job, can or bricklayer.
Ashley Theophane seems to think he's better than he actually is imo. Ashley Theophane beat Danny Garcia for my money, but he's not a top level talent like he seems to think, he has an ambush type of style that gave Garcia issues, that said, that might say more about his style vs Garcia's style, than his overall ability. Ashley Theophane should of lost to Delvin Rodriguez for my money.
He has a point there is no way he should bet a shot after such an uninspiring performance Gavin was as Negative and uninspiring as his beloved Birmingham City Saturday.
Ashley's full of **** i'm afraid. Unless he's going to pull out some world class opponents to win that Lonsdale outright I really don't know what he's going on about.
Theopane says he's going to defend the belt three more times. All things being equal then he should be defending against the best domestic 140lb fighters out there. Khan & McCloskey would have no interest in fighting for the British title so next up on the list is Olesegun and Gavin. If he genuinely plans to defend the belt three times then he should be agreebale to facing Gavin. It's not as if he's a world chamion and Gavin is some lowly ranked fighter making noise. Gavin is a credible and legitimate contendor for the British title and Theopane should fight him if he has any ambitions to further his own career.
I don't think he's against fighting Gavin at all. I just think that he's fighting his corner, he's made claims in various interviews that he's been offered peanuts to fight Gavin, or a sum to vacate the title to allow Allegedly to do his magic with the board.... something that Frankie didn't exactly deny on here. If Warren wants Theophane for Gavin he's gonna have to put his hand in his pocket. Until the board say to Theophane that he's got to fight Gavin or vacate the title then there's purse bids (most of which will have to go to Theophane) or he can make him an offer. If I were him I'd do exactly what he is doing right now. Fight the mandatory contender and should he win, weigh up his options from there. Warren is just ****ed financially because he's given these lads deals that he can't realistically finance, unless the opponents are cheap and nasty or it's PPV.
