If he wasn't American, would Chad Dawson get more love?

Chad Dawson has never really gotten love from the American fan base. By all accounts, he is a humble, respectable person outside the ring and a pretty good fighter inside of it. One could argue that his victories over Adamek and Johnson are better than anything on the resumes of Bute, Abraham, Froch, and a number of other Canadian and European fighters.

However, the American fans have labeled him as "boring." A lot of times we tend to expect more from our fighters than just a good record. So, if Dawson was hypothetically born in or fighting out of another country, do you think he would receive more support from that fan base than he gets from Americans? Also, which country or countries do you think might appreciate him more than we do?

Absolutely ... foreign countries support their undefeated fighters especially if they're ranked p4p .... so go into the pascal bout they would've been there ... he didn't give it his all but he took over in crunch time so I don't think he would've lost too many fans after that bout

That's what I think. If he came out of almost anywhere other than America or Mexico, the fans of that country would love him. We have a lot of posters from all corners of the globe, so I am hoping to hear from some of them.

Maybe in some countries he'd be better recieved than he is here but I'm sure some countries wouldn't be interested in him as well. I think he gets more HBO airtime due to him being American but the absolute biggest problem with Dawson is he just ins't exciting and almost seems like he doesn't care or want to be.

I'm a big Dawson fan, I think he's very talentd, fights the best, and seems like a likeable guy but I'd have a hard time convincing others to agree because he just doesn't make for exciting fights most of the time. He lacks intensity and is content to coast to wins when he's able to. He fights too infrequently as well which kills any momentum he is able to build.

The main question should be: if Dawson wasn't an american, would we talk about this guy?
talented but boring (the Bell Centre almost fall asleep) but in another way, it's not his game to make this entertaining. Does Mayweather is fun to watch? Surely not but he is damn effective.

He'd probably be huge in Germany. He'd be somewhat popular in England and Canada. He'd have a modest sized but cult-like following in Eastern Europe, similar to Ismail Sillakh, and would fascinate people with the 'black russian' angle.

He probably would not be very popular in the North American mainstays of Puerto Rico or Mexico because while they support their boxers, they expect a certain style out of them. Dawson would be way too bland both inside and outside the ring to catch on in either of those countries. He might even be less popular there than he is in the US. Certainly in Mexico.

Plenty of fighters with good records and lesser resumes get spoken about a lot on ESB. Suppose he was from London and had a date with Hopkins on the horizon. Don't you think there would be some threads up about that fight?

Exactly the type of feedback I'm looking for. Thanks.

As a Canadian I bought this fight but didn't get the HBO broadcast. Instead we got Dave Bontempo, an American fight analyst and a sidekick I don't know. Both these guys had Dawson losing by four points. I had the fight a draw because Dawson seemed disinterested in the fight and fought negatively with a bored expression on his face. Diancano who seems about as athletic as Peewee Herman showed a will and desire to win and tried to engage his opponent and took chances to land his blows. Dawson has talent but little love for the sport and probably should quit and train to be an accountant. For some reason he reminds me of my accountant. He has that dead look about him. His eyes are dead.

American fight fans today like blood and guts type fighters to a certain extent. Floyd is an exception now a days to the the rule.

I disagree .... Yes we would speak of him ... he has wins over adamek and tarver and johnson ... anyone who beats tarver and glenn (post jones jr) is going to be recognized my the average boxing fan

the united states produces some of the best fighters in the world. if you don't stand out you are just one of the rest. other countries don't produce that many good fighters so one they get a reallly good one they stand out in that country.

I disagree ... look at cristian mijares ... he was the total opposite of a traditional mexican fighter ... he had alot of support in his prime and so does ivan calderon ... I think he would've been a success anywhere but the US ..

one thing is every country supports success so chad being recognized a top 10 and I'm sure his coutry would've back him up reguardless .. the US doesn't support success in boxing because they have tooooo many sports to glorify .... basketball, baseball, football, hockey, golf, tennis even nascar .... I would put boxing behind all those sports as far as popularity in the US
