Why all of the knocking for DeGale? I admit DeGale was loud in the build up to his fight with Groves, but Im sure alot of that was to help build up the fight. Obviously people felt for Groves and wanted him to win, and he has. Groves has the last laugh after all of taunts and it should be left. Why knock someone when they are down. Groves is being very humble after all of the build up and maybe we should all take a leaf out of his book. Both fighters made claims of how they were going to KO the other. DeGale is still a talented fighter who can go on and hopefully improve. DeGale and Groves provided an intriguing fight that was close. I had Groves a close winner, but neither fighter was shamed in an absorbing battle. Both fighters deserve massive credit for putting themselves on the line so early in their careers. The result is good for British boxing as neither fighter suffered a bad KO and can go on. If one fighter had of been KOd he would have to rebuild from the bottom, but as it is, both are in the mix. Due to how the fight finished we are fortunate to still have 2 good prospects instead of 1.
There are a lot of muppets laughing at Degale. Personally I think he is the more talented of the two. Offensively he needed to be more aggressive and work his way inside on Groves though. That is where he lost the fight. Sitting and waiting for countering opportunities on the front foot allowed Groves to get off first and then move. Degales defense looked good at times but he did leak shots throughout the fight. I don't think anybody is writing him off though. I'm sure most on here would pick him to win a rematch.
Watch the post fight interviews and ull see why DeGale aint gettin much love on here and why people are liking Groves.
DeGales feeling a bit deflated im sure and I admit he is not gracious in defeat, but many fighters arent. I think DeGale has been shown his weaknesses but can come back from it. Groves boxed a beautiful fight, in that he knew DeGale had better hand speed but needed to plant his feet to use it, so George used his better footwork to deny DeGale doing so. Still we have 2 good prospects and once the dust has settled we could be cheering DeGale on in a world title fight one day, and maybe one day a fantastic unification fight with Groves, like Benn and Eubank
He's a hard guy to like but the loss isn't the end of the world. People were suggesting he should move into world class this year and Degale seemed to get a bit carried away himself. At least now he's had a wake up call and should be under no illusions that he will have to knuckle down and work on his game if he wants to make it.
I kinda agree, he was just hyping the fight. After the fight he wasn't that bad in the post presser, but people were saying he was a sore loser, when he wasn't being, he lost a close fight and was obviously disappointed, would you expect any less? In fact I expected him to be much worse that he was. The only person DeGale has been disrespectful to is Groves, and I don't understand why that is so bad - they were opponents, people are just hating on him now because he lost and making him out to be worse than he actually is. I'm not saying he's perfect but who after they have lost a close fight is?
Yeah, I know what you mean. I was going to add a disclaimer to my post about him maybe being too arrogant to take the lesson but I thought I'd try and keep the post upbeat! Groves fought a superb fight but DeGale was poor Saturday for a 3 year pro. Didn't cut the ring off, didn't work the body to slow his man down, seemed mentally troubled by a fairly tame cut.....all this from a fighter who was supposed to be making the big step up in the next 9-12 months. He needs to understand that he's not that talented that he can succeed at world level without developing a decent, solid style of fighting.
Like you say, he's talented but he isn't that talented like say, Wilfred Benitiez, that he can cut corners or take the ****. (and he's still slapping!!)
I was glad that Groves won because he has conducted himself a lot better and is a likeable lad. I knew if Degale won he would have gloated forever. You just know he wouldnt have had any class, he would have really rubbed Groves nose in it. If it was Degale against another top contender, I would have been rooting for Degale, because I genuinely believe he is top drawer and want to see him fight the best in the world. Although I picked Groves to win on points, I think Degale is better than Groves in most areas, but he got outboxed because Groves had the better game plan and his preparation and execution of the game plan was excellent. Warren should use all of his experience now and get Degale to realise he is only a novice (a talented one at that) and should stop getting on like he is a P4P boxer because he hasnt done anything on a world level yet. He needs to stop believing all the hype and Warren needs to get in a top trainer. Degale, should reflect on his performance and be a sportsman about it. Sure, there was nothing in the fight, it could have went either way, but that is boxing and that's life. If he showed a bit of maturity and congratulated Groves on his performance he would earn a lot of respect from boxing fans.
I think DeGale IS a decent bloke. He just talked way too much smack and couldn't back it up. Blessing in disguise for him IMO.
funny? what did you find funny about what he said? sorry, but holding your nose and saying someone smells, is not really my kind of comedy. maybe its funny if your in nursery school, but for a grown man, an olympic gold medalist, im just not getting it. or were you just laughing at what an idiot he exposed himself to be?
i never really saw what was so great about james degale, and yes, i did pick groves to win this fight and posted it on here. to me degale does'nt seem to be a physicaly strong super middle, i dont think he has the mental toughness, and he slaps with his punches, he does'nt have real power to make opponents respect him, he is slippery and has some defensive skills but i think a big strong super middle would just walk through him.
