I find it interesting that they're both from General Santos City. I heard that place is a real shithole even for third world standards.Think about it, it is very rare for a country outside America to have more than one person in any p4p top 10 list much less from the same city. To all the Pinoys in here, is there something about that city that makes it produce quality fighters? Are there anymore world champions that came from there? Is there a secret A-side Meth lab located there?
Donaire was actually born in Bohol but moved to Gensan ( General, Santos).Arum is trying to sell the comparison and this is the main selling point. But yes Gensan have had good boxers.Naverrete and Sonsona (youngest champ from there) after he eclipsed Pacquiao's own record when Pacquiao was 2 weeks shy of his 20 birthday became world champion.Saludar will probably continue the trend if what i see ( real talent) in this kid is correct.
See u prompted me to do a quick wiki search and found out out this additional interesting tidbit---they went to the same school. How many people from the same elementary school have two peeps on the p4p list. Cuuhraaaazeeee.
So u sayn GenSan is the Philippines boxing factory? Is there any particular reason why this region produce exceptional fighters?
Southern Philippines produces the best boxers. I dont know why, but they say it is the "MAIS" (corn) that make them strong. A-side Meff= Mais???
I have no idea mate. I haven't been there. Might want to ask our resident General Santos member on ESB :think There are Southern FILOS here but not from GENSAN. :good
Its interesting. They say the poorest regions in the world produces the best fighters....but of all the poorest regions in the world this lil corner of the PI seems to produce champions on a regular basis. There must be some sort of inherent boxing/fighting culture in those parts.
We have many promising athletes, but due to lack of funds, poor management/support from the government, that these quality athletes turn to farming and other hard labor jobs.
Based on my observation it's not the riches city but it's not as industrialized or crowded dare i say polluted as Manila or Cebu. There's actually some nice spot with scenic surrounding and beaches, it's not a slum. It's not as chaotic.
From what I've heard, anyone from the southern part of the country who moves to Manila gets belittled by the middle and upper class of Manila.
