His management. Vargas went from fighting nobodies to fighting Quartey and Trinidad in the space of 3 years.
He was an accomplished amateur who it was believed could be put in with harder competition. He beat Quartey much more clearly than Oscar in my opinion, and he beat Wright also in my opinion. Look at Oscar, Whitaker, Holyfield, Reid, Whitaker etc. All accomplished amateurs finding themselves fly through the competition en route to the best in the division. Sometimes it works in the cases of Holyfield, Oscar and Whitaker and sometimes it doesn't in the cases of Breland, Vargas and Reid. If my fighter could best guys such as Quartey and Wright, then the only way to go is to go to Tito.
True he was an accomplished amateur but the fights with Quartey and Wright were grueling and tough. If I'm not mistaken he'd only fought over 8 rounds once as a pro against Raul Marquez.
I'm primarily an Oscar fan and even I can't deny the sheer balls, heart and courage Vargas had to fight Campas, Marquez, Wright, Quartey, Trinidad and de la Hoya in the space of like five years. Marquez doesn't get to much mention anymore but as you state tough fighter and a solid solid pro.
I don't personally believe he would have ever been good enough to beat either Oscar or Tito, he was good enough to find himself at the top of the mountain and there was no way any management team could convince him to stay clear of Oscar and Trinidad in my opinion. Guy had too much fight in him. I believe his management actually stole quite a few dollars from him, and for that reason I could find myself despising the guys who managed him.
Vargas was never the same after Trinidad. He looked awful in the two or three fights he fought after Trinidad. Vargas performed admirably while under the help of PED's vs DLH, but I believe thats more a testament to DLH's ability (my belief has always been DLH was overrated) .....anyways, the PED's helped Vargas be competitive vs DLH as that was the sharpest Vargas had looked since the Trinidad fight. .....there is'nt any question in my mind that being bounced around the ring against Trinidad, permanently destroyed the part of Vargas brain that stabilizes his core. Got to admire the Warrior in Vargas however. His heart wanted to win so badly, but that part of his brain that stabilizes him as a fighter said, "I cant help you, I've been difused."
Without an argument: Felix "Tito" Trinidad and his LOADED WRAPS destroyed Vargas' career. U people crucify Margarito. Trinidad was doing the same thing. And who knows how many others.
Anywas Vargas has ended up pretty tragic. Destroyed by Tito at the age of 22 by illegal wraps. And all his money stolen from him by **** manager who mismanaged his career and future health as well. "The former business manager of Fernando Vargas has been arrested on suspicion of stealing the former world champions fortune. According to the Ventura County Star, Joseph Louis Pecora was arrested Monday on charges of grand theft by embezzlement and forgery after a long investigation. Vargas attorney Greg Ramirez told the Star that Pecora allegedly pocketed about $400,000 and lost millions by mismanaging Vargas financial affairs. Ramirez also said the Vargas family had to move out of their home as a result and Vargas might have to start training to get back in the ring.." Apparently Vargas is punch drunk now as well??
how was he doing the same thing if he didn't contain plaster in his wraps??? nothing has been prooving with tito's wraps, other than bernard looking for a reason to slamm tito mentaly in any way he could, which he did. they saw his wraps, made them remove them and didn't find anything wrong and told him to rewrap. if there was something wrong the situation would have been more critical. they said nothing was wrong with wraps, and bernard came with his usual old lady gossip talk, the man fought pascal in a fight where there was controversy before, and at the end won and deserved the victory, spoke in good of pascal and showed respect, and now he's coming out suing??? come on the guy has some issues or he's more gossip then mid life women in a beauty salon. The man acts like this :angel then when you turn around he goes like this :tong OR... he just acts like the ******* he is.
Well I agree with that. Bernard has a punk personality, always has and always will no matter what he does in the ring. I actually forgot it was he that started the whole Trinidad wraps controversy..one of those things I went on believing without questioning the source though. Trinidad always did seem like TOO prolific of a puncher though at 147, knocking strong chinned fighters down and snapping their heads back with jabs. Regardless, Trinidad still ruined Vargas Still, cause BHOP started the rumor it loses credibility
it was everyone. One guy who was stopped in a similar fashion of my favorite guys Thomas Hearns, but Tommy didn't lose his skill level like Vargas did. Tommy was much greater, but he seemed to add different things to his fighting style than Vargas did.
Trinidad. Way too early for Vargas, Trinidad nearly had double the amount of fights Vargas had going into this fight yet he still gave Trinidad one of his toughest fights. I can't understand why he was rushed to take this fight.
