I totally agree with your sentiments regarding the second fight. It may not have featured the amount of drama that 1 & 3 had,but it was still a very good bout.
It was almost like they'd slowed the tempo,minimally,knowing that it was the middle fight of the trilogy.
My personal favourite is Norton II - Ali really looked amazing in that one for me - more like his old 1960's self - with all the amazing movement and against a better 1970's quality opponent - Norton was awesome in that one too - they both looked in incredible condition too and some of the slugging sessions were unbeleivable

I agree. The best fight of their trilogy. Ali's speed was awesome. His fastest since 1967. Norton proved that he was a genuine top contender,and no fluke.
He was 212lb for the Norton rematch. The same weight as he was for Bonavena match in 1970. The lightest he weighed before that was against Mildenberger in 1996, when he weighed 204lbs. I thought Ali lost the first Norton fight, clearly. How any judge could score that fight for Ali is beyond me. Ali worked on his physical condition like a demon for the rematch. I think that fight might well have been the most crucial of Ali's entire career. Pulling off the win gave him the momentum for the Frazier rematch in 74, then onto regaining the title from Foreman in Zaire. The Norton rematch was a risky assignment, indeed. Back to back, defeats would more than likely have sent him into retirement. If not, then he'd have taken a while off. And that would have made him very rusty. It's highly unlikely that Zaire would have happened had he not won the Norton rematch. And if he did return to the ring his chance to regain the title would have been pushed onto 75 at the earliest.
