Hearns saw Hagler as a midget also to be honest, which is why he went so hard with him. Difference was Duran couldn't take Hearns punch and Hagler could. But Hearns went at them in a similar mindset. He didn't think either guy could take his punch, and Duran fought at 154 before Hearns and fought the champ at 160 2 years before Hearns did, and was champ in the same division.

hearns was physically superior to duran in every area, by quite a bit. just look at the picture i posted. duran's whole arm is about as long as hearns' bicep.

True, but the main thing was speed. Iran Barkley had a long reach also and was 6-1 also, and he did not beat Duran. It takes more than just height and reach to beat Duran. Hearns was a great.

oh, for sure. hearns is one of the greatest punchers of all time. we're underselling his technique here. it's not as if he just had long arms and fast hands. and i think he was at his best at 154 too...

it's a great win, but i don't see why people are making excuses for duran. if anything, it's a compliment that people think he could even have had a chance against someone like that.

No excuses, everybody knows I've never made an excuse for a fighter in my life, and I find excuses laughable, it's common knowledge. But I think everybody knows this is not the peak version of Roberto Duran, right?

Nobody's saying he beats him at any stage of their careers. But this is not the Duran that Dejesus beat, right?

end of the day, would pacquiao even think about fighting paul williams at 154? and paul williams isn't in the same league as hearns.

Not the same type of fighter, not on the same level, not in the same league,

    Styles makes fights.

You might be a Duran fan but don't be fooled by the fact that Hearns' enormous advantages in speed, power, height and reach make this fight and absolute nightmare for Duran at ANY weight.

Listen, hearns at 154 in 84 was one of the greatest fighters ever, and hearns was never better than the june night in vegas against duran.
However,i feel the result is somewhat misleading. Duran was subpar, not the duran of the hagler/moore/cuevas bouts. This is no slant against tommys performance which was still phenomenal.
I feel if duran was sharper hearns may have won on points in a competitive bout . I dont feel duran would have been beaten like that again in an immediate rematch or ever again.
At 147 duran wears tommy down for a late stoppage.
Basically it was the speed of tommy which was awesome that night and the laziness of duran that made the difference.
Its a shame there was never a rematch.

I think shows how good Hearns was at his best. Even though Hagler beat Hearns, Hearns was greater and proved it at higher weights and against better fighters. At 147 Duran still does not move his head and he is stopped again. It doesn't change. If you don't move your head you will be hit with Tommy right hand, and could Duran take it? Probaby not with the speed Tommy would have at 147.
