This European 154lb title fight is as good as it's going to get. :-(

Konecny is a big favorite. He's defending at home, and has a much better resume than Bayram. The only real advantage the Frenchman has is length but the Czech should be able to chop him down to size.

 

First up is the women's 160lb WBO + WBF title fight between undefeated champion Christina Hammer and undefeated light middleweight Maria Lindberg moving up in weight to challenge.

The Swede comes out to some very melodramatic symphonic music in a loose red hoodie that leaves her looking quite androgynous with just her grim face sticking out with a firmly set jaw and a fixed expression of determination.

The German saunters out to some peppy Euro rap, much more boisterous, waving her arms to the crowd as she dances to the ring in a soccer shirt.

 

National anthems. Time for snacks.

 

Round 1

Hammer starts out with long left jabs and sweeps of the forearm while circling off to her left, staying long and tall. Lindberg tries to duck and dive her way in and gets off a couple of flurries against the gloves but isn't getting inside to land. Nice looping right hand counter by Hammer lands flush on the chin and swoops Lindberg over a bit but she recovers well. Hard jabs by Hammer. Lindberg just shoves her way inside with her arms crossed together. Clinch. Hammer keeps jabbing and moving. Clinch. Lindberg not getting any punches off. A couple of wide clubbing shots come up from beneath Hammer's armpits and hit shoulder.

Round 2

Hammer is still keeping Lindberg at the end of her jab and staying far enough out to take all the steam off the curveballs Lindberg is chucking on her way in. Lindberg stays aggressive and pressures Hammer back around the ring, digging a bit to the waist. Hammer lansd a 1-2 as Lindberg is coming in. Lindberg claps her way inside and lands a bit behind the ear. Another clubbing combo as Hammer is failing to keep her distance now. Lindberg keeps getting inside and wailing. Clinch.

Round 3

Hammer is dancing around her target and popping 1-2 combos and laughing as Lindberg takes wide slicing swings at nothing. Hammer having a very good round here, landing the jab and right hand in one fluid motion on the lateral step. Lindberg isn't landing any of those clubbing inside shots that she scored with last round. Clinch. They infight a little, mostly ineffective with Hammer holding Lindberg and pinning her arms. Shove-off by Hammer and she gets into range to pop the jab some more. Clinch again. Hammer pops off the 1-2 and keeps landing the set-up jab but having her crosses ducked.

Round 4

Very nice outside boxing by Hammer, eluding Lindberg's diving lurches with quick feet and folding herself in at the middle from body attacks. The 1-2 still landing well. All Lindberg is able to do is hit gloves and drive her way into clinches (where she doesn't have the strength to keep her arms free and overpower Hammer with any inside game). Hammer is whipping with the jab now, and putting some extra oomph on the right cross. More hugging, initiated by the challenger. Three punch combo to the face by Hammer up close. Clinch.

Round 5

Lindberg jogs in and gets her head wedged under Hammer's arm, repeatedly for the first thirty seconds. Hammer is leaning back and lining up her 1-2 before Lindberg can flop forward into another clinch (with fists sailing in wide from either side on the way in but not connecting cleanly). Lindberg is getting stunned a bit by some of those right hands, taking an especially sharp one right on the nose and jerking her head back a little. Incessant clinching by the Swede, no warning from the ref. Lindberg pumps her fists at Hammer and gets through one nice right hand but eats a few crisp counters in the process.
