i did say guards up defence, jones had a very weak guard when he put it up. overall defence calzaghe comes last, head movement was also implied with reflexes
skills-wise they are all different. A prime Jones Jr would wipe the floor with Prime Hopkins and Prime Calzaghe together though. legacy-wise i think hopkins has had the better finish but calzaghe and jones will always be mentioned in the same conversation.
There are certain things about Joe that are debatable. But his handspeed was world class and his stamina extraordinary. Of course, he was not a great technician like Hopkins or Andre Ward. But he was still better than Jones, whose boxing skill is flawed. Roy hardly knows how to jab. He was a pshysical freak and a great entertainer, but the worship of him makes little sense to me. A real ATG should be able to keep up, even after his prime, and Jones can't. Calzaghe was wide open when he came in attacking. Kessler caught him cleanly, Hokins caught him cleanly, hell, even Jones had him with a clean upper. But aside from that he often displayed movement of a kind that you can really only get away with if you are a notch above your opponents in speed and reflexes.
Calzaghe's handspeed and stamina were fantastic on the physical side but on the mental side he had an incredable will to win and a great boxing brain being able to change tactics in the middle of a fight, people talk about his resume but head to head as proven in the amateurs and as a pro he was a nightmare to try and beat.
If Joe and Roy where to fight prime for prime, my money would be on Roy, obviously. When I wrote that Joe was better, I meant in pure boxing skill. Not head to head.
I wouldnt have put money on Jones beating Calzaghe in Wales without any performance enhancing additives.
Shows how good a fighter jones was for people to be accusing him of PED's, He wasn't Proven guilty, He was Clean, He was superman
