How will this Joe Calzaghe video be perceived in 20 years time here on the Classic?

I'm not criticizing Joe Calzaghe here, I don't want this thread to turn into that, just wondering what a Classic perspective is going to be on a fighter with this sort of technique that managed to be so successful. What does it say, if anything, about this era?

I think this tribute is a better refence to his ability. Im not saying the video you posted, tagged as 'Calslappy' is bias or agenda driven or anything.

And going by this he looks a level above anyone from the 20's, most guys from the 30's - 50's, and still looks world class thrown in with the guys from the 60's - 80's

His offense is comical - barrages of quick slaps, half of which miss the target - but Muhammad Ali hit like that on many occassions too !

1st off - I didn't make the video, saw it on the General.

2nd off - How can a video be "bias"? None of the footage is faked or distorted. It's all real video footage of a "modern great" at work.

It is. Prior to the Veit stoppage Calzaghe had dropped him heavily with an overhand left. He'd laid a fair bit of leather on Byron Mitchell in a spirited exchange after being dropped himself. Those stoppages are taken out of context.

I'm no Calzaghe supporter though, and he was never a puncher, despite th 'bad hand' theorists, that just made him even less of a puncher. He was awkward though, and could land some decent shots in amongst his flurries.

A very good, perhaps borderline great whose resume is lacking. Much better than is given credit for I think. I think he would have been a tough cookie for Hops at any point, Toney as well maybe. He would have certainly been taken by Jones Jr. in his prime in a pretty fun fight. That being said I think he was a damn good fighter and the evidence is in a guy like Kessler whom he dominated... Look at what a much worse version of that guy gave Froch. He'd give any S6 performer a hell of a time.

20 years time people will be like..Joe who?
Oh yeah, that dude that hid in Wales all of his career and then came out when his 2 main rivals were over 40 years old.

Yeah but Ali knocked out Liston and Foreman, 2 of the baddest mofos in boxing. Period.

    And Calzaghe Kod........Tucker Pudwill????

I think the actual point of the thread is being missed a bit - it's about the technique on show. Have there been other "greats of the era" in the past who have had as weak punching technique as this, or will Calzaghe be viewed as a technically deficient anomaly in the future?

He is awkward, and does everything to win, he has great stamina. But his level of opposition is so poor its pathetic
Hopkins - over 40 years old and Calzaghe sqeuaks past him (controversially)
Jones - Over 40 years old with his best days behind him. Kod before and after his fight with Calzaghe by single punches.
Eubank - another old man on his way out
Lacy - Hyped up for no reason, did jack before and after the Calzaghe fight
Kessler - also did jack before the fight and after...Carl Froch lost that fight due to not doing enough, rather than Kessler doing anything (Froch would wipe the floor with him in a rematch).

The rest... a load of nobodies.

I mean, the video is a total baiting/trolling piece. It's created to take a shot at Calzaghe. I can make a video of plenty of all time greats looking ineffective and second rate, getting outboxed, getting tired, getting hometown decisions and you'd think they were 2nd rate as well.

Plenty of second rate punchers accomplished a lot. Greb, Loughran, O'Brien, Rosenbloom, Pep, etc etc.

Yeah, I said Muhammad Ali fought like that "on many occassions" .... obviously, not always.
Just pointing out that Calzghe's shitty punching seem strangely effective against third-raters, as did Ali's shitty punching sometimes.

Definitely Ali hit Foreman properly, and Bonavena, and Lyle (at least once) ..... I'm not so sure about Liston though.

I do think the Liston fight was dodgy (the second one)
But on paper...Alis punch landed on Listons chin...Liston goes down.
Ali can get away with certain things because he still did enough to show how good he is.

Calzaghe is so **** its unbelievable. he couldnt KO Roy Jones who was Koed by...Johnson, Tarver, Green and Lebedev FFS

Hes just like Lennox Lewis....hide until your best opponents are old and then come out. Kudos to Lennox though, he beat everyone else.

But this video isn't any of that. This video is of wins - no, this video is of stoppage wins. Can you post a video where a supposed HOF fighter exhibits this level or this style of punching technique? I think this video is pretty shocking. I'm sure there must have been other fighters who were so technically deficient, but I honestly can't remember ever seeing any, other than an ancient Harry Greb shadow-boxing video!
