In boxing if you fall forward on your face the ref doesn't even have to count.

with all due respect a KO means Knocked Out = lights out/asleep/unconscious but i understand what you are coming from too.

No,that displays a modicum f common sense. What you are saying hitting the matt after being cracked on the chin and showing no sign of movement isnt a ko

Yes, but that's a very literal interpretation of the term. As fans of this sport, we know that a 'KO' does not only mean when someone is literally knocked unconscious. It's also applied, by the rules of the sport, to fights such as Arlovski-Nelson where one fighter is prostrate and rendered unable to defend himself or continue due to a strike.

Exactly, plenty of guys have been ko'd without being 'asleep' as he put it

    Here's one example

Paul's eyes are wide open, does that mean he is concious?

I'd take it a step further my friend.

To me, even this is rightfully classified as a KO:

If a fighter cannot beat the count, he has been knocked out.

A TKO technical knockout is a different thing, where the count is not even involved, ie a referee stoppage like this:

Vic was all heart there, but in no way was he in control of his senses, it was all instinct

And you got to factor that a tko in mma is a more regular as being unable to defend/respond on the feet in a similar fashion to Vargas is a different kettle of fish when you can punch on the grounded opponent, and the ref steps in before he can be ko'd clean
