Out of Monzon, Hagler, and Hopkins: who had best chance to beat both?

    As much as I like Hagler, I'd have to go with Monzon on this call.

    Monzon.

    I've been watching a lot of Hopkins in the last week. There are so many holes in his game, but he hides most of them well. Hagler is my 2nd fave middle ever but I think (by a very narrow margin) that Monzon could upset his applecart with strength, persistence and his amazing control of distance and pace.

    Monzon was great but I feel like people overrate him just a tad. He had all he could handle from Bennie Briscoe. Briscoe was no can but he was no Hagler either. I'd take Hagler. Hopkins loses to both IMO.

    Specific regarding what?

    Regarding Hopkins, I love the guy, but he's not a combo artist, he's dirty as ****, leads with his head, gets off balance, headbutts, kidney punches, fakes low blows.... On the other hand, he uses space well, has a great knack for the single shot counter, decent power, sturdy beard and will never let anyone look good against him, even when he's obviously losing.

    Regarding Monzon v Hagler, it's a close call. I think in Briscoe and Valdez, Monzon beat a lot of the factors Hagler brought to the table. And Hagler had trouble against several lesser luminaries... Monzon arrived to the ring with great consistency, always in shape, always giving a championship effort. You don't go 80 or so fights undefeated by accident.

    Hagler, because he had a little bit of everything. The speed and the skill to work his way in and out of Monzon's range, all the while gradually working the body with effective punching. He had the technical abilities to rival those of Hopkins, and also the physical abilities and tenacity to wear him out.
