Max Baer was sometimes totally ferocious, sometimes a Jester. But he had real clout on him. I think he directly killed one guy. Carnera ended his life with a jab, poor guy. [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gSrtLbTeukM[/ame]
Flea Man, yes he directly killed Frankie Campbell of California at the beginning of Baer's career.Frankie Campbell was the brother of Dolph Camilli, who was a great first baseman for the Brooklyn Dodgers in the late 1930s. After Camilli ,came Gil Hodges at 1st base...Baer was more suited for show business than boxing, by temperment. Baer had the greatest "backhand " in the business...
compared to this era of fighters where would he fit in with his power between these Tyson, Haye ,klitz, lenox (or anyone you guys think of )
Baer was one of the harder hittters in HW history. He also had one of the best chins. If he had applied himself to the game, he could have been one of the top ATGs.
Curtis hatchet man sheppard said "Joe Louis could hurt you...Max Baer could kill you!". He also said of Louis beating Baer that "kayoeing Max Baer was like chopping a tree!"
My grandpa met the man and claimed no one punched like Max did!! Grandpa claimed Baer knocked out a Bull with one punch... Not sure what that's worth but gramps thought it was impressive lol
A thought on Max Baer.In 1959 I watched Max Baer being introduced before the main event on TV. He walked up the five steps to the ring and catapulted over the ropes into the ring for his introductions...Wow I thought, the 50 year old Baer is in great shape...A couple of weeks later Max Baer suffered a massive heart attack in his hotel room and died... PS in the Cinderella Man picture, about James J Braddock, they portrayed Baer as a villian. What an injustice to a beloved figure Max Baer.....
