I disagree fiercely with you, and just can't see how you could come to this conclusion.

No one else was ever able to do anything like this to Duran; not even when he was fat, shot and 50!

Given Duran's pedigree and status Hearns' two round destruction must rank as one of the most impressive victories in boxing history.

Hearns would have knocked him out just as easily. There would have been another excuse no matter what. If Duran wanted to win this fight, he has to move his head and get out of the way of Hearns right and get under it. He couldn't. How is he supposed to take every right Hearns threw and last 2 rounds? Weight or other things do not matter. It has to do with Duran getting under Hearns punches, and Duran couldn't. All Hearns did was use his jab to measure him and land his punches with top leverage. It was not that difficult to see. Duran was not going beat Hearns. I mean even had Duran been able to take Hearns right hand, the right hand was swelling the left side of Duran's face. Something was doing that. How many guys landed that clean on Duran. Hearns was not the typical guys Duran fought. He was better and had more potent offense.

How about prime Duran (the one that had a 154 lb. fight in one of his tune-ups) vs. the Hearns that KO'ed the 33 year old Duran

Hearns always beats Duran. Even if Hearns right hand would not hurt Duran, it would cause swelling. Hearns landed it too easily and Tommy was better and quicker than most of the guys Duran fought in those years. Duran can beat Davey Moore, but Thomas Hearns is a whole different level as we saw.

I don't get your Barkley point. Barkley beat him twice; I'd predict Barkley to beat Hearns any time they fought. Its just common sense after the results.

Duran is a better ATG, but Hearns parked him. Just an utter buttwhipping, Roberto had nothing and he got iced.

Again, I have to emphasize Duran's punch evasion in Montreal. Nobody ever made SRL miss and swat air so much, not even Benitez and Shields. The leaner Duran of Montreal wouldn't simply be absorbing those rights of Hearns, he'd be actively getting underneath them. Take a look at Duran's slippage of punches in Montreal, then compare it to how reduced his capacity was for evading blows in 1984.

he fought Benitez before Hagler and Wilfred outclassed him. And Hearns and Benitez were both fast. Tommy would have always stopped Duran. Duran never saw a jab like Hearns jab and then the follow up right would not miss. Hearns is a guy Duran could not beat. The reason Duran took the punches of other guys is they did not punch like Hearns and have leverage and speed like Hearns.

At that stage in Duran's career he either did not have enough or want to give enough to prepare for each fight. He was beaten by Robbie Simms and Kirkland Laing too. When he wanted to he could beat almost anyone. It seems as though he stepped it up when he saw a big pay day and let down when he did not need money.

That was the only time in his career that he was knocked out. I just can't picture him standing right in front of Hearns like that again. He would slip those punches and pound Hearns skinny body if Duran was in his prime or motivated when past his prime.

Carlsberg don't make boxing excuses but if they did they'd probably be Roberto Duran boxing excuses
