How would Gene Fullmer do against Marvin Hagler & Bernard Hopkins at 160lb.. how do you see the fights unfold.
It starts out as a handicap match but then B-Hop makes a heel turn halfway through the fight to get the victory over Hagler.
Easy picks for me. Marvin Hagler would cut up the rough Fullmer, and probably stop him. Hopkins would certainly outbox and outfox, Gene Fullmer IMO...
The strong as a bull rough guy Fullmer not skilled enough to beat either one. I agree with Burt, Hagler probably cuts, chops and tko's Gene and Hopkins too foxy for him.
Hagler slices and dices Fullmer like raw meat for a mid-rounds KO. Hopkins would most likely outbox him to a UD, but Fullmer would be a handful.
I believe Hopkins would be able to control the distance and win a decision, but Fullmer would cause him some uneasy moments....think of trhe dirty tricks that might happen in this fight though. I also think Hagler would beat Fullmer, but less decisevly than Hopkin's would....Not because I think Hopkin's is better than Hagler (although I do think they are real close!), just a styles thing. The pressure Fullmer would bring, would cause some hard to score rounds and I can see him frustrating him at points similar to Antuofermo except I think Fullmer is little stronger and more intense. Hagler by a point or 2.
I agree Hagler too much everything for Fullmer, hed do well when fighting Fullmers fight, and bust him up when playing the boxer/puncher roll.. I know people will bring up the 1st Antufurmo fight and bring up his smothering but, that was just a lapse in fight plan (the last half) he dominated the majority fight, and it was a bum draw. Besides we saw what he did to Srong Pressure guys after that Antufurmo(rematch),Hamsho(2x),Sibson he dominated those fights.. Hagler Tko 8 or 9 rounds.. Fullmer is game and fights his heart out but maybe wins 2 rounds,,, Hagler pretty much dominates after that. Hopkins would not fight Fullmers fight he would box him..Fullmer would win his fare share of rounds on agression.,,But Hopkisn would bust him up, by putting a clinic on... And when he wanted he would resort to old Philly slugging(hedid that alot at Mw) and he would to well in the trenches,,Hopkins was much bigger-stronger than the guys he mauled at Mw.,... Fullmer keep it somewhat close but by th mid to late rounds hes a mess,,and would be getting outclassed and punished...Although Hopkins was a good puncher at Mw .l. Dont think he would drop him for the count. Ref saves Fullmer.. Exciting and evenly fought up to the mid rounds,.. But target practice after.,.Today 9 or10 tkos,,, back then late stoppage 13th or so.. Both Hagler and Hopkins are as tough or tougher(in Haglers case) than Fullmer... Hopkins much bigger,, Hagler much longer reach... Fullmer was very strong physically but he couldnt bust or wear these guys down,, Both guys to athletic too.,,. Fullmer is matched in his strenghts and outclassed in their strenghts.
"The Fullman" would be game as all hell, but also out-classed by both "Hagler & Hops" at 160 via a time machine.... 'Nuff said..... MR.BILL:bbbhat
Styles make fights and besides, everyone knows that although still great.. Robinson was no longer unbeateable or invincible.. He was a great puncher at Mw but not physically as strong as B-Hop or Hagler.. At that Pont Robinson also seemed to make fights harder than he had too, sometimes letting them force their fight on him.. Still smooth, still fast but only at about 75 or 80%.Although good height at Mw (5-11) he was really a natural Welter..He was just so good he didnt bother to make ww anymore. you can tell by his built he was pretty think and smooth not really musclular, cut up or as powerfully built, like most mW (certainly physically slighter than Hagler,Hopkins).. The rivalries he had with Fullmer,Basillio,Turpin ,Olson,Pender etc etc were classics, and those guys were all time greats, but i bet you none of them even beat Robinson once in his prime much less numerous times(combined).. Lamotta got a prime or near prime version of RObinson and he only managed 1 our of 6.But only the first time.. Lamotta was stronger than Basillio, better more skilled even tougher and at least as physically strong as Fullmer,. Olson Pender? pleASE!! LAMOTTA WOULD EATTHEM FOR BREAKFAST.. Turpin excellent boxer/PUNCHER but not on a prime Robinson level.. How ever Robinson had dropped down a notch on the greatness level(ability wise),compare his days at Mw... Kind of like Duran,,, Still great but no longer superman and domninant like they were.. Or Ali when his legs and reflexes slipped a notch(greatest wins in second career) and looked great alot of the times still, but not so great others ,,
