Good article saying Greb had his eye damaged in August, 1921, and lost his sight in one eye by late-1922.

    The 5 Greb-Tunney fights were:

    5/22
    2/23
    12/23
    9/24
    3/25

Greb probably fought Tunney blind in one eye for 4 of the 5 fights.

I'm not sure when Greb's sight went to hell, but he was thought to be nearly blind when he lost to Flowers in '26 prior to his death....

He was blind long before that but I'd have to look it up to find out when exactly. 1921 against Kid Norfolk. He was thumbed which cause a detached retina which led to permanent blindness. He got pissed at one of his handlers for saying something about him being blind in 1 eye and whooping Tunney. He never wanted anyone to know.

I believe it was his pal, Happy Albacker, who was Greb's closest confidante throughout his career. After the first Tunney fight they all retired to a bar where various fans yelled out about Greb having won in spite of being handicapped by height, weight, length, and Albacker chimed in about being blind in one eye too. Nobody there seemed to pick up on it.

And yeah, it seems to be generally accepted that it was a thumbing by Kid Norfolk that led to his detached retina in 1921. Although I've read reports suggesting that this would not have resulted in an immediate loss of vision, but rather a decline, and that the exact point at which he lost it, is difficult to surmise. Either way though, he more than likely relinquished perfect vision in that Norfolk fight.

Of course, all of that is subject to an expert like Klompton, who knows infinitely more than I do, coming in and setting me straight :S

it is not such a big deal being blind in one eye.. Joe Frazier was Heavyweight Champion of the world and blind in one eye.. i know from personal experience.

I agree you're blind to many things, but you most certainly don't know from "personal experience" unless you have fought that way at the highest level. :-(

your wrong again... Level of fighting is imaterial, what you are trying to insinuate in this thread is that Greb achieved some kind of super-human feat by fighting blind in one eye for several years, yet many many pro fighters fought blind in one eye at the top level including Joe Frazier the Heavyweight champion of the world who mimself never asks for extra praise due to his afliction. Gipsy Joe Harris was an incredible fighter who no-one could lay a glove on in training or in the ring yet was blind in one eye from birth. my personal experience is that i was champion of the armed forces yet blind in one eye. it is not such a huge handicap as you are trying to imply and if you have no personal experience of it then keep your mouth closed on the matter :hi:

So you never fought blind in one eye at the highest level and don't know. Thats all you had to say.

But the bottom line is it is a VERY hard thing to do or many more people would have done it. :good

There is a difference between asking for special preference and the ability to perform on the highest level. Of course it is a huge handicap. The fact that Frazier achieved what he did was exceptional and highly over looked by so many who question his chin. Try coming in Frazier style and getting hit full force by a shot you never see coming at you by a huge, world class fighter .. in fact Joe may have an all time great chin when you consider the shots he took ..
