J.C.Chavez Vs Meldrik Taylor, explain the controversy

I think Steele was right to stop it.

Taylor was badly banged up and despite beating the count still wasn't capable of continuing..... obviously the HBO commentators felt it was a disgrace but you've only got to listen to the commentary to see where their bias lies.

Listening to it you'd think Taylor was beating Chavez handily but was weathering a few rough rounds before being dropped late and ripped off. Taylor was winning most of the rounds but had to spend plenty to do so..... and couldn't help himself getting into a fistfight.

More blame ought to lie on the shoulders of Lou Duva, who told him he needed to win the last round (and then denied saying it) and then clambouring onto the ring apron to distract his fighter at the end.

It wouldn't have been unreasonable for Duva to pull Taylor at the end of the 11th. He was fighting on instinct and had nothing left throughout the 12th.

 

The fact that theres was 5 seconds left is a big part of the controversy, Meldrick was winning the fight clearly, and imo could have carried on for the 5 seconds, especially when Chavez most likely wouldnt have a chance to land one more punch on Taylor. Taylor was stolen of a victory by Steele's judgement.

 

Mel could have held the guard or ran for those 5 secs?
That was an insane but also good call from the ref..Chavez was losing and then found his way to end it..****!!
Mexicans must have been celebrating the fuk out of that night!

 

It's not the referee's job to play time keeper, or be sentimental.

The only reason Steele gets **** for this is because he let Hearns get up when Barkley stretched him, then said he did it because a great champion should have the right to get up and attempt to carry on.

That fight was bizarre, Barkley would have been pulled out by his corner at the end of the 3rd round, cut badly over both eyes, badly banged up and being bent double by body shots several times.... then WHACK - Hearns down :-(

Probably the worst hiding any fighter has taken in a fight which they won inside three rounds, even worse than Hagler took off Tommy.

 

No he wasnt, Chavez was at the other side of the ring, Ive never seen a fighter stop his opponent within 5 seconds of a fight continuing after a knockdown. Taylor also looked away from Steele when Lou duva jumped on the ring apron, so that was probably why he was looking away from Steele. Did Steele even see the clock behind him signaling the last 10 seconds of the fight? Maybe if he had he wouldnt have stopped it. Bull**** call if ever there was one, especially since it was clearly Taylor's fight.

It also goes to show how he looked in the rematch..reminds me of jermaine taylor..Ironic.

maybe im exaggerating slightly, but its not very common. Only really happens when a fighter is completly out of it and shouldnt have been let continue in the first place. You can post some of the many examples if it happens more than once in a blue moon.

 

He was fit to continue IMO.
