J.C.Chavez Vs Meldrik Taylor, explain the controversy

still to this day for the life of me cannot imagine the ref didnt realise there was only seconds left remaining and that taylor would of had this on points

even if he is completely out of it this is for the championship of the world and theres little more than seconds remaining

 

Exactly, and with only seconds remaining, one of the greatest fighters of all time pulled a win out of his ass.

You're talking about a situation where 2 seconds left and Taylor doesn't get sparked but 5 seconds and he probably does. If you don't believe me time Don Curry getting over to KTFO Milton McCrory.

Is Steele expected to be able to make that call or should he just go with whats in front of him, a fighter unable to defend himself?

 

I just timed Curry-McCrory. From the time of getting waved back in by Mills Lane it took Curry less than 2 seconds to get across the full diagonal of the ring and land the knock out punch.

if he was knocked down at the same time but it was a 15 round fight i think it could of still continued.

I don't see how people can bring up that there was only 5 seconds left in the fight. It's not the referees job to protect the fighter unless there is only a few seconds to go in the round. Like people have said the ref looked for a reason not to stop it by asking him again and looking at Taylor at the end of the fight he wasn't responding to the ref and was badly beaten.

 

Thats an opinion (I disagree but there we go!!) but I was just pointing out the time remaining was more than enough for Chavez to get to Taylor. A lot of the people who say it should have continued cite the time remaining as a big factor.

Bute should have been stopped too, if it wasn't for his personal referee he was gone against Andrade the first time.

i think the ref was entitled to stop the fight for me it was a acceptable stoppage

 

Really cant believe people have much of an issue with this stoppage. He was holding onto the ropes didnt respond to the ref. Even if hed had the lightest KD ever the ref would be more than justified stopping it.

it's the fact he's up so early that makes it such a bad stoppage.

if taylor had wobbled to his feet at 8 or 9 i could understand it. atsch

 

The one thing that needs to be noted; the referee is there for three things:

Administering counts

Judging and punishing foul play

And by far the most important, to recognize when a fighter is in a position where in the referee's opinion the fight should be stopped.

There no timekeeping duties involved, and thankfully even now in Britain the referee does not need to score a fight.

Richard Steele made a call; Richard Steele is at the very least a competent world class referee; case closed.

And for those who say Taylor was winning easy, a broken eye socket and an internal cut that even Lou admitted led to Taylor swallowing a pint and a half of his own blood, suggests otherwise.

 

That night destroyed Meldrick's career.

The major question surrounding this is was ''Did Steele make call because Chavez was a King Fighter''. It has some substance behind it because i believe he made strange calls in other fights involving King's fighters.

The fight is for 36mins. The ref has to look out for interest of fighter and if they cannot take no more punishment in those 36 mins. The clock shouldn't matter it's a fight over the duration of bout but sometimes it's common sense that ref's lack.

Personally i can't judge this because his backs to camera and can't hear what's said...but i do believe that if it shoe was on other foot he would of allowed Chavez to continue and see final bell.

Remember all it takes is one punch in this sport...one punch and a man may not only lose his career but his life.

 

They certainly didn't seem to think Steele was on side here, he deducted JCC a point, but he lost widely on my scorecard.

After he has already spoken about him, at 8:15 he goes after Steele again. Chavez lost widely, and was a bad loser. But I think Steele was a fair ref'.
