So who do you think is going to win tonight's fight? I notice the odds were crazy 17 to 1. So who is going to win???

Never seen him? Jhonson ( spelled like this ), is an Olympic Silver medalist and had over 300 amateur bouts in Cuba and Internationally as well. The guy is " smooth as silk " as described by Atlas. He is a very skilled, technical and extremely accurate counterpuncher with outstanding defence. On top of that he is a lefty and also has good power. The only bad thing about him is that he is 30 years old already and is just starting in the pro game ( like many Cuban defectors ) but the guy definitely has the goods. He reminds me of a prime Casamayor but at 154 pounds!

He has been overshadowed by Cuban teammate Lara, but Jhonson in my opinion is much better ( in the technical department ) but Lara of course has more KO power. Just go to youtube and search for him. But his style is for the fan that really appreciates the sweet science and not for the fan who wants to see a street fight! He is all business " Cuban style " in the ring.

To be honest, I'll go with Yudel. Lara really dissapointed me last time against Molina but I know that he barely trained as his trainer Shields was in Ireland with Rigondeaux. Either way, Yudel is much more technical and much more schooled than Lara and he is also a southpaw. Now, Lara has time and KO power on his side and is improving very fast. If Lara beats Paul Williams ( and he certainly can if he trains good ) then I will change my mind but up to now Yudel Jhonson schools him in a classic counterpunching battle, Cuban style! :good

YJ is the goods. He's not yet being matched competitively. 17-1 isn't too off base.

What I'm really looking forward to on tonight's FNF is a look at Luis Ortiz. He's the guy who recently obliterated Bert Cooper. Assuming he gets through his opponent tonight, he has a step-up date lined up with Luis Pineda (who's been in with lots of good fighters and is a nice solid gatekeeper) on the Golovkin-Ouma undercard later this month.

If he looks very impressive in both outings, and remains active - we could be seeing the emergence of a new rising star at heavyweight.

Ortiz is really good but age is not on his side. He is 32 years old already and really needs to hurry up to see if he can at least fight for a World Title. This is the main problem with most of the Cuban defectors, they defect too late! Imagine if Gamboa, Lara, Rigondeaux, Solis, Jhonson etc would have defected at age 21-22? Wow, they would have been major stars already. But nowdays we are seeing more " young " Cubans defecting early in their early 20's like Ugas, Acosta etc...

I didn't know Ortiz was fighting tonight, will he be on TV? :huh

He should be on TV. I can't imagine he wouldn't be.

The main even (Jhonson vs. Torres) is scheduled for 10 rounds, and the next longest bouts on the card are a pair of 8-rounders: Ortiz vs. Arron Lyons & Tyrese Hendrix vs. Walter Estrada. There is ample time for ESPN to squeeze in all 3 and it would be surprising if they didn't - especially since they are often authorized to change the length of bouts that they air (ie from 8 to 6 rounds) to accommodate their programming slot.

...and yeah, the time is now for him to make his move. Mike Perez has the more long term promise IMO, but Ortiz could still make a splash before he's through.

Yeah, Mike Perez is real good. This is actually the first time that Cuba has 3 very solid HV prospects in Solis, Perez and Ortiz. Glendy Hernandez is another Cuban HV to watch out for as he is young at 24 I think. To be honest, this is the first time that I will watch Ortiz, ( if they put it ), but I have heard very good things from him. This is what I tell people all the time, imagine how many fighters the Cubans would have in the pros if Cuba was totally free? If we have around 4 solid HV's with just a very small group of defectors then imagine if all the Cubans were allowed to become pro! :scaredas:

Yuniesky Gonzalez was better than Ortiz back in Cuba. He is only 25 years old and fighting in cruiser.

Well Ortiz was national champion in Cuba and won the amateur World Cup as a heavyweight.

Which were the accomplishments of Yuniesky?

Either way we have a good group of fighters, IMO we should get a least 5 champs out them.
