I highly doubt Ray would concoct a story like this for publicity. In fact, I think it's insulting to even suggest it. Most people, especially males, have huge shame about their abuse and wouldn't bring it up unless they felt it was necessary. Leonard held this in for decades for this very reason, I'm sure. I give him credit for disclosing....it is probably healthy for him to do so, but it could also inspire other victims to speak the truth. Give the guy a break.

 

how come sugar ray leonard got a free pass from the media on the cocaine and slapping around his wife Juanita ? Public condemnation has been harsher for some with lesser offenses

 

Looking forward to the book, and certainly hope Ray wouldn't stoop as low as to make up **** like that in the hope of selling more books.

 

I hope for his sake he's not making it up, the questions about him are already there.

 

I don't see why an ex-professional fighter - one of the greatest to ever do it,no less - would want to create a story which involves another man trying to suck his ****.Not to mention the fact that Leonard claims that he responded to the homo advances of the coach simply by getting out of the car and running away.Leonard wasn't exactly a young boy when this incident took place,either.If anything,the story makes him look mentally and physically weak by not defending himself.

 

Yeah, so .... whether it's true or made up it's very strange that he would tell this story.
But of course he's very possibly going for the Oprah Winfrey audience ..... or can we say "attention whoring" ?

Honestly, I know celebrities always like to say, "I'm telling this because I want to help and reach out to ordinary people who might have had similar experiences.", but in 90% of cases I don't buy that crap.
These are ego-minded formerly famous celebrities desperately seeking another platform to grab an audience with. They are the same selfish vain individuals they always were.
Cynical perhaps, but that's my take on it.

Good luck to Sugar Ray anyway. If that's what he wants to be known for .....

 

Well,Leonard coming forward with these claims nearly 40 years after the alleged incident took place wouldn't be helping anybody.Besides,admitting that another man tried to give him a slurpy could have potentially hurt his image while was an active fighter.We're talking about a guy in his late teens here,not some little kid.



Either way,it's a great marketing ploy for his new book.Personally,if true,I would have kept it to myself and lived with the shame for the rest of my life.

 

Ray has been very open and frank with a lot of things (his strategy before New Orleans, his decision to call out Hagler, the outcome of the rematch with Hearns etc) and if he keeps it up here (and it seems like it) it could be a very good read indeed.

 

Ps. Man, this is a sad forum on so many occassions. Some right idiots here, and when it comes to Leonard they get even more ******ed than usual.
