His name wasn't even Robinson. He fought in place of a kid named Ray Robinson, they announced him as Robinson and the name stuck. Can't remember his real name though.
Nah, Herbie is wrong. The other guy above or something is Adnan Catnik or something. The imported fighters into Germany change names because they sounds really crap to the German public.
WTF? **** thread alert... Any reasonable human being assumes Mike is nickname for Michael, Tommy for Thomas, Chris for Christopher, Joe for Joseph, Ricky for Richard, Eddie for Edward... Detective Obvious...
Good work. On that note, how about famous chin checker, eventologist and commentator Lawrence Merchant? Donald King Kenneth Norton Ah yes. I suspect they thought the public might struggle with a name like Paul Walters
Walker Smith. Willie Pep didn't use his real name either, he changed it a bit from Guglielmo Papaleo to make it easier to pronounce for the English speaking Americans. It wasn't unknown for the Italian or Jewish (usually German/Polish immigrants) boxers back in the old days to Anglo-cise their names a bit. Johnny Dundee (Giuseppe Curreri) was another.
But still hasn't made his pro debut despite being around for such a long time Well spotted. It's short for Mike :good Good contribution, but I notice you've been keeping your real name to yourself up to now. Isn't that right... Lawrenceboys!
With all this talk about fighters changing there names to get noticed why doesn't Audley Harrisson change his name to "That cheque aint cashing it bounced off my ass"
