I wouldn't say so. Depends on what Leonard shows up, IMO. Pretty 50-50 fight. I consider Robinson at his 147 peak to have a very strong pressuring attack . Robinson is a lot like a combination between Leonard himself and Hearns... Solid rangy boxing, unbelievable combination punching, and great durability. If Leonard couldn't keep an older Duran coming up in weight off him... How much better would he fare against a prime SRR? I'd favor SRR over Hagler too at their MW peaks, just because Hags had a tendency IMO to fight with the wrong gameplan in a lot of his biggest...
Valid points ..I still contend that any of those greats could have hung with greats of the 80's and the modern era .Now a days the out of all the elite fighters of today can we say the same ? Today there is only 2 standouts out of the talent pool of so called elites ..That was not the case before .
So are we saying that guys like SRR and Dempsey had better opposition than those guys in the 80's and 90's and had opponents with a larger variety of styles and skills that they had to face in their time? It seems like the thing im seeing the most talk is their conditioning because they fought so many times?
I will disagree, I think present fighters have become smarter inside and outside the ring. This is just my opinion I feel todays fighters are stonger, faster, and are better all around than old school fighters. I feel old school fighters and I know thousands will disagree but were more puppets of the fans and who ever invested in them financially. They say a picture is worth a thousand words and just start looking and comparing pics and videos and perhaps you will see todays fighter are underappreciated and the old school fighters overappreciated. Lets try something, get me footage or pics of who you think had quickest handspeed from old and new school. The most power from old school and new school. The best defense and footwork from old school and new school. The best physique old school and new school and etc...
You'll be waitting a long time for that. This is fantasy thread, they want nothing to do with reality...
why didn't you answer my question? :huh there are loads of sloppy technical hacks in the sport right now who seem to be doing well. give me an active fighter right now aside from a fossil like Hopkins who you might say is comparable to the old-timers in terms of technical skills?
I really don't think so, most likely you'll get a few who'll call you crazy, a few will ask if your joking. But none will put up or shut up. Just like the Haye fans who guarantee David will knockout Wladimir in the first round but none will put their money were their mouth is!
So what exactly are we saying about technical skills? Give us an example of what guys like Robinson, Archie, Pep and those guys had that guys from the 80's and up lack?
Sorry, didn't see your post at first. Yes I mostly just keep up with the heavyweights division. And thats were the real hate in boxing is right now. When a writer is talking down boxing, he's really just talking down the heavyweight division. This writer is not attacking the WWs or MWs.
I think any guys that had defense in particular and master it like Whitaker and Benitez would have been very succesful if you put them in the 1900's and after. Guys with speed like Roy and Leonard would have accomplish perhaps even more if they fought at that time, dont you think so?
