Gibbons was past his own peak as well, though. He had retired a couple years earlier, and was on the comeback trail when Greb beat him in their rematch (prior to Gibbons' retirement, he had reportedly just edged Greb). Granted, Gibbons was still respected, but now he was losing or struggling vs. fighters he had beaten easily a couple years earlier (ie: George Chip, Jeff Smith). Also, fighters that had previously shied away from him (ie: Mike O'Dowd) were now deciding to try their luck with him.

Do you not think Gibbons could be considered the better fighter at the times of these respective fights, how they fought in said fight, and where their careers went afterwards and why?

He was winning at the top level still, no?

My question remains..Can this be a comparative win for Greb as Ross was for Armstrong?

Nobody at the time thought Ross was past it. And he wasn´t. Armstrong just was that good. And Ross retired because of that beating. He may have thought afterwards he didn´t have it anymore but I don´t think it was because that was the case. He lost because Armstrong was that f*cking good.

What Greb did in 1919 may be the single (45 bouts/45 wins) most impressive effort(s) in all of boxing.

Armstrong for me. They spanned the same amount of weights, have comparable wins, but Armstrong has a win in his highest weight class over a top 10 P4P'er. Its an amazing feat. I'd say thats the slimmest of edges.

I edge towards Armstrong, but the difference is negligible. We are really splitting hairs, in trying to give an edge to one of the other in any decisive manner.

Didnt know you thought Ross was top 10 p4p material greg. Anyway i think I'll go Armstrong as well. Ross is a huge accomplishment, not only as a win and a name but skipping over a full division to one sidedly whip a guy like that is pretty impressive.

So was Ross. In his previous title defense, he had beaten #1 contender Ceferino Garcia, who later went on to win the MW title.

I don't think so. Gibbons and Ross were both fading ATGs, but Armstrong was jumping straight up two major weight classes to upset Ross.

    It's a difficult one.
I'd say Armstrong because he knocked out or stopped the vast majority, whereas Greb only scored a few knockouts. I value the KO.
BUT .. Greb was even busier than Armstrong ! I think he had more fights in 1919 alone than Armstrong had in 1937 and '38 combined.
