Due to the position of Johnson's gloves, even if Johnson blocks Froch's punches his head is getting jarred. I unofficially count these as "partial connects" to take the hits into account. -------------------------------------------------- Froch controlled this fight primarily by controlling the distance. I think we all knew that if Glen Johnson could consistently get into the inside, Froch would be in trouble. In part due to the massive ring and Froch's foot speed, Glen Johnson was able to get inside for about 1 minute of the 36 total minutes in the fight. Glen Johnson is a TV fighter. He's a pressure fighter, a volume fighter and has decent power. When he got inside, he was able to make the flashy punches that were showed in the instant replays. However, Froch answered every flashy punch, and wasn't seriously hurt at all during the fight. I had Froch ahead 9-3/117-111 (have to re-watch to tell you rounds... I made that mistake in an earlier post about Cotto-Clottey)
Jut watched the fight again and here's my score: Rd 1 Cagey opening, neither fighter landing with anything. Both looking equally as busy even though GJ looks the more 'aggressive'. Even round 10/10 Rd 2 Johnson snaps Froch's head back early. Another cagey round but Johnson looks the more convincing. Froch throwing more but hitting gloves. 10/9 Johnson. Rd 3 Froch much busier, throwing combos but most getting blocked. Johnson lands a nasty right that backs Froch up, but not enough to outshine Froch's work this round. 10/9 Froch Rd 4 Both fighters busy. Froch starting to dictate the range and Johnson not quite so eager to press him. Some flashy combos from Froch but again a lot of them getting blocked. Close round but I give it to the busier fighter. 10/9 Froch Rd 5 Clearest round yet. Froch by far the busier and landing some hurtful shots. Johnson lands some of his own but Froch looking the more effective fighter right now. LOL at Showtime commentary 'England, ya got a fighter here!'. 10/9 Froch. Rd 6 Close round, both fighters busy. Johnson clubs Froch with a big right hand but Froch comes straight back. Tough round to score. 10/10. Rd 7 Another close round and another big Johnson right hand. Johnson looking more urgent but Froch lands his own big shots and generally looking more busy. Froch 10/9. Rd 8 Best round of the fight so far by a long way. Johnson delivers a monstrous right hand but Froch again comes straight back and gets another right hand for his trouble. Overall punches landed is probably about even but the cleaner and more effective work is from Johnson. 10/9 Johnson. Rd 9 Clear round for Froch, Johnson looks like he's tiring. Even Glen's mother wouldn't score this round for him. 10/9 Froch Rd 10 Clear round for Froch. Johnson throws yet another big right hand and Froch comes back with an unanswered 6 shot combo, some landing cleanly. Johnson reduced to head-hunting a guy that will not go down and is coming back with venom. Froch looking the more effective fighter. Loving the Showtime commentary 'What happens Antonio, when you're older, and you get to the later rounds of a fight?', Tarver: 'I don't know!'. 10/9 Froch. Rd 11 Another Froch round. Johnson producing the odd hurtful punch but Froch is walking through them and handing some right back. Froch again the more effective fighter and Johnson looking exhausted. Froch 10/9 Rd 12 Clear Froch round. Froch on the front foot for the first time and Johnson still looks tired, Froch 10/9. My score card is 118 - 112 which probably isn't a fair reflection of the fight as a whole. I can see where Glen's cleaner punching may swing 1 or 2 rounds, but one or two 'clean' punches shouldn't overshadow a whole bunch of lesser ones. I don't know what the Japanese judge was smoking.
Froch fought a great fight, and like froch said Johnson keeps coming and hes like punching an oak tree, Froch will beat Ward and by looking at Wards face last night he looked worried .
I feel froch's superficially got himself a win. He threw superficial combinations (landing hardly) just to keep glen off of him and has figured out that most people can not tell if a punch lands or not. I didn't think froch landed hardly anything prior to the last 3 rounds. I would have rather been glen's face than froch's face during that fight. Clean effective punching doesn't mean **** anymore I guess. Just look good throwing combinations off the arms and shoulders of guy stalking u down and you should win.
Lucky the judges dont have to deal with biased side commentary... huh what was the final scores? 'Nuf said
I somewhat agree without you. It was hard to watch showtimes broadcasters cheering about Froch's punches that in my eyes sat right on the gloves. At the end of the day I think Froch should have the nod when rewatching the fight, his combos usually had a a couple of shots on the gloves and one down the pipe that went through, all in all I think he nicked a round or two more. But he definately got tagged with the harder blows.
Punches don't only count when accompanied by a cheering crowd. Aside from a few big shots the fight was Carl's.
You do have a point about people not knowing when punches are landing or geting blocked, but throwing 'superficial' combinations was part of Froch's strategy. What was he supposed to do, let Glen walk him down? I had rounds 5, 9, 10, 11 & 12 as nailed on Froch rounds and Rds 2 & 8 as Johnson's and I'd love to hear any opposing view on those. Even if you split the remaining 5 close rounds 4-1 in Glen's favour just out of sympathy alone he still only gets a draw (which is probably where the japanese judge got his scoring from).
Its simple rounds 1-9 pretty much even. Froch won 10,11,12 the CHAMPIONSHIP rounds to take a clear win :deal Johnson was slightly better than I expected but not much. Froch did what he had to do but was a little disappointing, I already knew this but Ward beats Froch silly :deal
