Too bad Jones didn't take on Julian Jackson or Gerald McClellan

One thing he is missing on his resume..an elite devastating puncher. Would have been very interesting to see how his chin would hold up if these fights took place at 160 and 168lb

 

Too bad Jones didn't take on Frankie Liles or James Toney @ 175 .
Too bad Toney was and is obese and that he didn't just vacate the 168 title like he did the 160 . Him and Jones should have fought @ 175 after Roid would have won the vacant title .. wait ..
or not . Depends on whom he'd have to fight against for the vacant title.
Probably they would have supplied him with some undefeated bum .
But Jones never wanted a fight with a live James Toney , did he ?
Nor a fight against a well prepared Montell Griffin .

 

Jackson would have been bombed out of there.

McClellan was far too basic but I guess he does have a live chance.

 

Jackson was much smaller naturally than Roy, and didn't have that great of a chin. And Roy was past 160 by the end of 92. No way they were putting him in with the kind of TNT the Hawk brought with him that early in his career. They saw what happened to Norris.

McClellan would've been interesting at 168.

 

The frustrating thing with Roy is, he didn't face a lot of men he should have when he was at his best. I think that will always go against him. Rightly so.

 

I tend to agree. I was frustrated with him until he beefed up to face Ruiz, but in hindsight I wish he stayed put and faced Hopkins instead.

All these fights should have happened, sans McClellan, and would have left a better imprint on his legacy.

 

Why a rematch with Toney? Should Hopkins have rematched Trinidad too?

 

To shut people up who say Toney was weight drained.

 

And just how many chances is Toney supposed to get?

He had his chance and blew it. Let's not give him undeserved credit for this.

 

:dealSpot on. These are the fights that everyone is aware of. It makes you wonder about Roy's belief in himself in challenging the best men. For a man of his astounding ability he should have at least fought one of them.

 

That's why i wanted to see it. Whether Toney deserved it or not.

So anyone making an excuse should have a rematch no matter how one-sidedly they lost? Lots of rematches that should have been made, but haven't in that case. If anything Toney himself should have granted McCallum an immediate rubber match after his sham "win" over him. Instead he got it when he was totally shot and with no hope.

Also, while a rematch with Hopkins would have been more interesting than one with Toney, it's not as Jones had anything to prove there. When they competed in the same weight class he beat him easily. To say a rematch was much needed is ridicolous.

A rematch is warranted when the fight was really close. Young, Norton, 'Spoon, Barrera - those are guys that had strong calls for rematches. Not Hopkins or Toney.

 

I never said a rematch was much needed, but it would have shut up some of the naysayers who say RJJ ducked opposition. I'm a huge, huge RJJ fan but got a little frustrated when he fought guys like Brannon, Hall, Frazier, Telesco when he could have faced the others I mentioned above. I'm not saying Toney deserved a rematch, and in fact I was glad Jones beat his ass. I think you're reading my post wrong.
