Who wins this bout between Jake LaMotta[circa Cerdan fight] or Marvin Hagler at 160 pounds .?
Lately, LaMotta is thought of by his weight drained ko at the hands of Ray Robinson, and Marvin Hagler's immage suffers from his bout with Leonard. But at their peaks, who takes this 15 round bout ?

 

Haglers more versatile so you'd have to favour him.

 

Hagler all day because he was a complete fighter. Plus he is one of my heroes.

 

Hagler had more skill and speed. He takes this.

 

Hags, although I dont know how well his style would work against a real a-level crowder.

 

If Lamotta took the place of Vito Anterfermo in fight one...Hagler loses...the pressure style got to Marvin in that one but he boxed better in the rematch. Also proved tough vs Hearns in a trade-off but Tommy never had the chin of Jake....This is a tough hard fought 15 rounder and in a 10 fight series I am not sure what the count would be but I like Jake style-wise vs Marvin....fight 1 Lamotta UD Hagler

 

The thread was Lamotta, Hagler "at their best". Hagler was not at his best against Antuofermo 1, even though he won widely in reality. At their best, Lamotta would give Marvin everything he could handle, but I think Hagler would win 9 round to 6.

 

I'd pick Hagler pretty much every time. It wouldn't be pretty affair but I just can't see what Jake would be able to do to win?

 

Fair enough. But Jake never had the punching power of Tommy. I don't think Jake can outbox or out slug Hagler. Jmo.

 

We've seen boxer-punchers of even a superb quality get broken down or troubled by a middling or merely good quality swarmer(Robinson-LaMotta, Louis-Godoy etc). LaMotta was a top tier swarmer at his best. My big doubt is whether he has the necessary right hand play to really trouble Hagler.. Not sure on that one. But Hagler IMO had a tendency to give too much respect and try and rely on his backfoot game(which TBH wasn't that good) in some of his biggest fights which explains the Leonard and Duran debacles... LaMotta has wins over some spectacular boxer-type fighters, going forward and backward.

Probably Hagler, though this one might be won on intangibles, such as cuts.

Hearns cut Hagler with his bomb(s).
One of the reasons for Hagler's all out fighting to try to quickly get Hearns out of there.

I agree that hagler was not at his best, for this fight...I actually think it launched him into the beast he would become though. I disagree about him winning widely in reality....Useing the 10 point must, it is a super close, ultra difficult to score fight. I had hadler by 1 but a draw is not out of the question by any stretch. Vito did some great inside work, and while Hagler won his rounds more decisevly, Antuofermo took several closer rounds. That may look like a wide hagler win, but in reality I believe that makes it ultra close w/ the 10 point must system!

 

Hagler is a far more complete fighter. LaMotta's toughness may well keep him in it, but Hagler takes a clear UD.

 

La motta. He could box too, and also moved up and fought lightheavys. He beat Robinson, and was close with him in other fights, got ducked a lot too. Lamootta was complete fighter, he was not a ko king by any means, he could box and brwal, fight from distance of on inside, and was way tougher than Hagler.
