I was with Virgil today at the New Jersey Junior Olympic Golden Glove Tournament in Newark. I was the Ring Announcer and had the pleasure of introducing him, Kendall Holt and Brandon Jacobs. Kendall's son had his 1st amateur bout, which he won.

Virgil never defended his title once by my reckoning? He had a good run as a top contender no doubt and his victory over maske distinguishes his somewhat.

Let's just drop the 21 title defences tho.

Well I have jones at 10. Hill is below him and dm but above maske and tarver

If you eliminate the win by Jones, Hill has a better resume at 175..

Not many people care about those eight billion defences because they were against opposition that wouldnt have had Yoko Gushiken, Eubank or Ricardo Lopez sweating.

And Hill was hardly ever showing great ability against them either. Not enough technical flair or chops to justify lauding his tedious 12 round robotic jabfests.

Hill defenses were not stellar, but Duran at lightweight did not have great guys to beat either to be honest, yet Duran's lightweight reign is seen a spectacular. Hill did beat Leslie Stewart, Bobby Czyz,Frank Tate (2 x), Tiozzo (2 x), Maske, Brudov and many guys who would have been champ had he not been champion. He even beat a pretty decent fighter named Crawford Ashley from England. Tall guy 6-3 with a great right hand. Virgil fought who they put him in with. He is being very underrated.

No it's not, he's rated so high as a LW because of what he did in other divisions. And Buchannan and Dejesus are still better than anyone he faced

Are you joking ? Qwai would have destroyed Hill. No contest.

Throw Hills defenses in the garbage. He fought a pathetic group of light heavyweights in the weakest period in the divisions history ... he was a one handed fighter with little power. He badly lost to blown up super middleweight Hearn's and as flattened by Jones after being tagged at ease for the first three rounds ... anyone using his title record of defenses for building him into an all time great obviously did not watch his reign unfold. I say all this actually liking the guy but being real. A decade earlier Hill would have been badly beaten by Saad, Qwai, Mustafa, Spinks, Johnson, Galindez, Conteh and Yaqi Lopez alone and that's just one decade ...

I liked Virgil Hill, but he would have been trounced by Victor Galindez...among many others.

Rocco Marchegiano , Sam Langford , Young Stribling , Tiger Jack Fox , Ezzard Charles , Floyd Patterson , Michael Spinks , Archibald Wright , Joey Maxim , Harold Johnson , Doug Jones , Glen Johnson , Antonio Tarver , Roid Jones .

I think Virgil Hill should be ranked somewhere near Bob Foster and his peers Henry Maske , Dariusz Michalczewski and Fabrice Tiozzo.

As I once wrote before Virgil Hill was the John Ruiz of the LHW division of his era , a LHW whom was KOd by a former middleweight and decisioned by a former welterweight , actually this is worse than Ruiz whom was only stopped by Tua (understood) and quite a supermassive cruiserweight in David Haye while in the post twilight of his career .

I wonder if Hill would make my top 40 at LHW.

What kind of bizarre logic does that come from? If you eliminate foreman's victory over frazier than frazier has a better resume than him.

The difference is that duran was never a beltholder, he was a champion. Even the ridiculous decision by the wbc to strip buchanan doesn't change that. Plus he also beat the wbc champ twice anyways.

For 7 years it wasn't debatable who the best lightweight in the world was.

I don't think hill ever had that acclaim until he beat maske.

Hill is between 11-20 for me.

    No.
The weakest era was arguably Bob Foster's era.
Either one of Maske , Hill , Tiozzo and of course Michalczewski stood a good chance at beating Foster.

he is rated high for other divisions, well then he is overrated like I always say because he beat Ray, but that was when Ray fought his fight and Ray won easily in the rematch and rubber match, and then Duran managed to lose to all the greats he ever fought Benitez,Hearns, Hagler. Virgil lost to all the greats he fought also Hearns and Jones.

It is about style and personality. Duran is overrated because of personality and Hill is underrated. Duran is not completely overwhelming over Hill at all if you look at thier records and opposition.

it isn't bizarre logic since the Hill/Jones fight was when Hill was starting to slip and Jones was on top. If people want to insult Virgil for fighting the David Vedders and Tyrone Fraziers, than Roy fought his own bums. Well maybe the light heavies had better fighters than lightweight. Dejesus vs. Prince Charles? Who was better? Michael Moorer and Lampkin?
