(btw, at the beginning of 2002, ottke is #1 at 168 according to the ring)

    jimenez - unranked
    pudwill - unranked
mitchell - #5 coming of loss to ottke
    mkrtchyan - unranked
salem - unranked coming off loss to veit
    veit - unranked again
    ashira - unranked
lacy - #3 (wins ring title)
    bika - unranked
manfredo - #10 coming off losses to mora
    kessler - #1

in 21 wbo 168 lb title fights, calzaghe fought 7 fighters ranked in the super middle top 10. 5 of those 7 fighters were coming off losses. the super middleweight division during this time was one of the weakest in boxing. joe was a good fighter but his resume is pathetic. ward and froch have already surpassed this.

Calzaghe isn't as bad as a lot of people claim

He was a very very hard fighter to beat.

But I never buy he was in Jones league, or guys like that

Roy would have schooled everyone on his resume, including him

good post. the calzaghe ut huggers have nothing else to do but to dramatize about a fighter who was good but never great.

He can't help what era he was in but I do give him props for beating Kessler, Lacy, and even Bika because he was a tough fighter. The thing is he fought them past his physical prime still giving top performances. He never would've beaten Jones or Hopkins prime for prime but beating a young, under 40 Dawson instead of a shot Jones would've been a better way to go out. He was very good but not tested enough to truly be an ATG. Even Jones had better tests yet his resume is still questionable although better with good names besides Hopkins & Toney(Mccallum if you want to include him at his old stage lol, Hill, Griffin, Gonzalez, Harding who was a decent fighter undefeated at that time and won title eliminator against a lazy Tarver, Malinga while Jones was the first to stop him after Eubank & Benn failed, Ruiz who hadn't been beaten clearly since fighting Tua 7 years ago and Tarver when Jones was at his best for the series though still faded)

title belts don't mean anything as far as someone being a great fighter. there are over 72 title holders in boxing, are they all great fighters?? calzaghe beat people that beat people  embarrassing that you tried to bring that up. being great is about who you beat and when you beat them.

Completely agree! Calzaghe is a great fighter IMO but he was not in Jones league. But then who was?? The Hopkins version who beat Trinidad would have beat him as well IMO.

also, people criticize jones about his resume but look at the annual ratings from 2001. he had wins or future wins over 8 of the ranked light heavys, a future win over the #7 heavy, wins over the #3 and #10 cruisers and a win over the reigning middleweight champ. very few have defeated as many ranked fighters as jones did in recent years. this is off topic but i wanted to compare what jones did to calzaghe.

joe calzaghe beat everybody in his era from the 90s-20:lol::lol:

The 3 biggest names from 160-174

Chris Eubank was 31yr old 45-2,..20 world championship fights. Calzaghe was 25yr old 22-0 and never been over 8 rounds when they fought

Bernard Hopkins was 48-4 the longest reigning middlewight champion in history had 24 world title fights and was the best light heavyweight in the world when calzaghe beat him

Roy Jones Jr has NO legacy at 160,,168,,175 or over 200 pounds because he never fought the elite fighters at any weight division he boxed in.

roy jones jr won a vacant middleweight title and made 1 defence he never fought the best at 160 at that time
    John David Jackson
Chris Pyatt and he Ducked the two elite fighters of the division Julian Jackson and Gerald McClellan

A list of the elite fighters at 168 that roy jones was Ducking when he was in that division
    Graciano Rocchigiani
Steve Collins 2 weight champion at the time
Nigel Benn 2 weight champion at the time
Michael Nunn 2 weight champion at the time
chris eubank 2 weight champion at the time
    Charles Brewer
    Frankie Liles
    Robin Reid

BEST at 175 was Dariusz Michalczewsk
roy jones won the vacant wbc title vacanted by Fabrice Tiozzo.
Fabrice Tiozzo lost his wba title to Virgil Hill then came back and beat Mike McCallum for the WBC light heavyweight title.

Dariusz Michalczewski beat Virgil Hill for the undisputed light heavyweight championship and holds the record for the most consecutive successful title defenses at light heavyweight 23 defenses. He was champ for 9 years an had a incredible 48 and 0 winning run

roy jones ducked prime Dariusz Michalczewski for 8 years and did not fight him even when he was shot

why did jones fight 35yo taver instead of Michalczewski?...........:scaredas:

why did jones fight ruiz instead of lennox lewis?.......... :scaredas:

Too the people that hype on about prime jones jr take off the rose tinted glasses he lost too a bunch of old guys anyway
    Antonio Tarver was 35
    Glen Johnson 35
    Danny Green 35
Bernard Hopkins 45 and joe calzaghe was 36 and at the very end of his career

joe calzaghe gave roy jones jr the ass whoopin when jones wanted it:think:think

joe calzaghe is the longest-reigning world champion of the modern era 11 years. Second longest reign in boxing history, He had the Ring Magazine Light-Heavyweight Championship, as well as the WBO, WBA, WBC, IBF,IBO and Ring Magazine super middleweight belts. The only one in history to become Undisputed super middleweight champion he has had 24 championship fights has 3 ATGs on his resume
    Roy Jones Jr
    Chris Eubank
    Bernard Hopkins

 first you say joe has a great win over jones because jones is an atg, then next you're saying that jones has no legacy in any weight class. which is it? jones and hopkins had a combined age of 83 when joe fought them. i suppose it would mean a lot for calzaghe to defeat ali right now as well.

By the way, people saying that Hopkins was "old" when he fought Calzaghe, Hopkins went to beat an undefeated Pavlik (when everyone thought he would be brutally KOed) and Pascal (light heavyweight champ)
