Did Joe Calzaghe really duck glen Johnson?

    A lot of people say this but I just don't see it myself.

    Yes Joe pulled out of the fight a couple of times but he was prone to injury problems. A lot of people say it was too much risk for little reward but I don't see any risk.

    Joe's style would be perfect against Johnson, Joe despite what many believe is a counter puncher, a very aggressive counter puncher who throws fast combos and then moves. A lot of people don't realise this because Joe controlled the ring so well and when he countered he went on the front foot.

    Johnson would be beaten in every round over 12 rounds. Styles make fights and Johnson was made for Calzaghe. Joe is too fast, throws too much and won't ge caught.

    Calsloppy was scared to cross the ocean....i can't blame him after seeing Titanic!

    He could have fought RJJ,B-Hop,and Glen.....before they were bidding for rooms in Grady Acre's Past It Home!

    Calzaghe would have won an easy UD.

    Yea he could have won any fight by easy UD, but he just never proved it.

    Very scary movie!!

    B-hop was the one that didn't want to fight Calzaghe, they met his demands and then he asked for double.

    Also Joe beat him at his best after he had beat tarver and winky and prior to him beating pavlik, pascal and soon he can add Dawson to that list.

    Anyone saying that calzaghe would have won (easy) dont know **** about boxing.

    Johnson may have 14 losses on his record but he is caslled the roiad warrior for a reason, fighting many fighters in their back yards and robbed of a few victories, this man aint easy work for anyone.

    I just don't see it as a risk though, due to styles I think he would look much better against Johnson than say bika or Salam and he would get more reward than he did against them!

    I am not saying johnson is not a good fighter just that I think his style suits Joe if kept at distance.

    I think Johnson is an excellent fighter and was robbed on numerous occasions however I don't think he would trouble Calzaghe due to styles!

    Not easy easy. But something like 117:111 or 116:112 with a few tough situations along the road.

    Great post 'Gained'!!

    But using facts and logic won't presuade the many Calzaghe haters on here. They will always despise him because he beat the best US had to offer.

    IMO Johnson is one of the only fighters who was active around the same time as joe who would have been able to test joes grit for the full twelve rounds, and drag him into a firefight.:thumbsup

    Amen!

    I was wondering why Jones never fought Nigel Benn, I remember seeing old videos on YouTube I believe of Benn always wanting that fight, saying it would be an honour and saying he'd do everything Jones wanted.

    A lot of people would disagree but if Jones did have a suspect chin all along then I think Benn could of won that fight.

    It didn't look good for Joe at the time because he pulled out of 2 proposed dates on June and July 2004. But he had a back injury that prevented the fights happening on those dates and then Johnson hit the jackpot when RJJ agreed to fight him.

    You can't blame Joe for being injured and you can't blame Johnson for not waiting around any longer and taking a fight against a much bigger name fighter, as in 2004 Calzaghe was still seen in the eyes of America as a euro champ and nothing more.

    As for the proposed fight in 2006, as another poster said Johnson lost a controversial decision against Woods and that scuppered their proposed fight. Though I would have preferred Calzaghe to fight Johnson coming off a loss than a no hoper like Manfredo.

    So no, Calzaghe did not duck Johnson. Had the fight occurred I am sure it would have been a tough fight for both. Johnson in 2004 was at his peak and would go onto beat RJJ and Tarver. Calzaghe would not have been able to simply outwork Johnson as Johnson had a great work rate as well and a better inside fighter. I suspect Calzaghe would have won a close decision.
