I know this is a current event, but I want to hear the classic's thoughts on this fight. There are way too many idiots over on the regular section to get objective answers.

On par with Floyd's list of good/very good but not great opponents. I can't complain really, since the Pac fight isn't happening at this stage.

largely unproven quantity, mayweather will beat him unless he's declining sharply. ortiz could have used a lot more seasoning but at least it'll be somewhat entertaining. maybe.

I was really surprised with how easily Ortiz hurt Berto. Andre never really recovered from the first round. I wonder if it was Ortiz' power or Andre's chin and whether or not the same would have happened in Mosley vs. Berto. Either way, I hope to see a really motivated Ortiz in there and maybe he can give Mayweather some problems.

Had Ortiz not beaten Berto and just moved up, I'd be really disappointed with this fight. As is though, he seemed to carry the weight really well and beat Berto who I respect. The only WW other than Pac who I'd like to see in there more is Khan, and he hasn't even fought at the weight yet.

I think if Ortiz fights Mayweather like he did Berto, he has a shot. Mayweather is no spring chicken, and as healthy as he thinks he is, fighting once every year and half will catch up to him. He's flirting with disaster and risking losing that big money fight. Ortiz is definitely more solid as a welter so hes going to stick around. Mayweather is going to run and stink out the joint and try and win a 12 rd decision. I wouldnt buy this fight for 5 bucks.

Although I am anything but a Floyd Mayweather fan, I'm pretty excited about this fight, I think it's an excellent choice of opponent and should result in an engaging clash. For me, Ortiz is a better fighter than Timothy Bradley or anyone else that was available, and since Floyd doesn't want to fight Pacquiao, this is the best option there is.

Logically, Floyd will just have too much in his armoury for a young guy like Ortiz, Mayweather's defence, quick shots from angles, and all-round mastery will be so far ahead of anything Ortiz has ever experienced that he should cruise the fight.

But, boxing isn't always logical. Ortiz now weighs 160lbs on fightnight, he is an excellent combination-puncher by contemporary standards, has very good punching power IMO, and is young, hungry, determined, busy and active.

If he hits Floyd on the button, which he surely will at some stage, he definitely has the power to hurt Floyd, and he won't gas out early like Mosley did after his early successes. And then there's Floyd ring-rust and the fact that he has barely fought a 'live' opponent in years to consider.

This one could provide some unlikely fireworks I think. Really looking forward to it.

I'm very interested to see the state of mayweather's legs at this time... I'm sure the ring will be huge regardless

I don't think Victor's complete enough to win. He'll be bigger, harder hitting with a decent straight left and combinations. The finer points of the game, like really good lead hand work, feints, and a few other things are out of his reach now. I would have liked him to mature in a few more title fights...

I can see the argument that Ortiz is the best fight to take at Welter, (other than Pacquiao) but much like the argument for Pac-Mosley being the best fight for Pac to take at Welter, it stinks.

Simple fact is that Ortiz is a young, green fighter with little world class experience who grabbed enough of the boxing world's attention that Mayweather figured he could use the kid to make a quick buck. Like any other promoter, he's going after money with the minimal risk.

Styles wise, Ortiz is somewhat dangerous because he's quick and has pop, but his style is made to order for Mayweather. Round, wide punches are easy to counter, and Ortiz' footwork is far from the best. And if he gets overeager like he did when Berto nearly KO'd him, Mayweather will make him pay then retreat out of reach. Ortiz' only chance is if he can crowd Mayweather, keep Floyd out of his comfort zone, (even with roughhousing and fouling) impress the judges with flurries and then nullify any chance for Floyd to respond.

Or, as Swarmer said before, hope that Mayweather gets old overnight and declines sharply. Not exactly a winning strategy against a fighter who hasn't shown much sign of that yet.

Should be an entertaining couple of rounds, then a domination by Mayweather. Not planning on buying it, will wait to see it later if anything of note happens.

^ No Floyd was planning on fighting Berto. Ortiz beat him so Floyd decided to fight him. There will always be people who rip on Mayweather, but reality is noone really wants to see him fight anyone but Pac at this point in his career.

floyd will dominate the fight and then receive little or no credit from fans or the media. i can't stand the guy but he's a hell of a fighter. arguably the best ever at 130.

Maybe so. If so, it shows (along with a dozen other examples) why such tune-ups and eliminators are dangerous to depend on, and it would still show Floyd going after a green, inexperienced fighter who needs work and doesn't deserve to be in with the top guys yet. The only differences would be that Berto is faster, has worse stamina, and less inside game.

I will agree with what has been said, however, that Pacquiao and Martinez are the only relevant fights for Floyd right now.

Better than a Khan fight. Why do people say Khan? At this stage Mayweather would kill him declined or not. Ortiz has good pop and doesn't throw too amateurish. Yes he can get wild when going for the kill but he is mostly disciplined with his punches and is a good boxer-type. Should be a good and most likely competitive fight since Ortiz looks good at the weight and Floyd is older, declining. People can bring up the JMM fight all they want to but that was a younger Floyd and even then Floyd said the ring rust affected him. Also, since the WW division is so rubbish now the best WW for Floyd to face now is Ortiz.
