Slappy's injury problems caused him to permanently postpone the fights with Johnson and postpone matchups with RJJ and Hopkins until both were over 40.

They didn't prevent him from fighting 20 other guys, though.

Yes your right Joe was prone to hand and wrist injuries which actually stem back to his amatuer days, Joe had to pull out twice against Johnson due to his hand probs. Sheika vs Johnson was a world title eliminator Sheika won , but if Johnson had i have no doubt Calzaghe would have fought him.

 

Yet all of these guys were mor credible than most if not all of Joe I'll hide in Wales til these guys get older Calzaghe !

No this is not a great post.

Yeah who would you rather fight, a local boy only known inside of Europe or have a chance to fight the legendary Roy Jones Jnr and enchance your reputation monumentally. Infact i'm surprised Calzaghe never bothered with Johnson after considering he likes fighting people over the hill.

1. Calzaghe wasn't the best in the era. He'd loose head to head if he faced a prime Roy Jones Jnr. He won't be rated higher than B-hop despite beating him, he won't be rated higher than Roy Jones Jnr. When Calzaghe decided to fly over the pond Roy Jones was KO'd by Tarver and Johnson and that's after he went up to Heavyweight to defeat Ruiz at the grand old age of 35. While Jones was doing this, Calzaghe was defending his title against fearsome contenders such as Mger Mkrtchyan and Kabary Salem.

Calzaghe demolished old man Jones Jnr, just Calzaghe fans add it to his resume as a significant win because Calzaghe's resume is so ****ing weak and yet he is considered an ATG, he's record really is a who's who because no one will recognize who these B/C level fighters are. He was quite happily a stay at home fighter until Jones got old (i'll give him credit for beating Hopkins).

What amazes me is these fights never got made because "he priced himself out" however, when after he left Frank ****** Calzaghe suddenly found himself in the ring with B-hop and Jones but 10 years later.

Well it seems Eubank didn't exactly push for a fight against Jones Jnr, it seemed he was happy facing number one contenders.

As for Benn it's common knowledge he declined to fight against Jones Jnr. Gerald McClellan was a friend of Jones Jnr.

Dariusz - It's well documented that Dariusz and Jones never took the risk to fly over to each others back yard and fight each other.

Calzaghe is the longest reigning champ but the level of fighters on resume is highly questionable. Beating Lacy (who achieved nothing after his loss and with each passing day his win over lacy proves to be less than impressive, a mere footnote, an American hypejob). Kessler (hasn't been that impressive, a good win over Froch and a one sided loss from Ward).

but the collins fight fell through because collins was considered the man he beat benn and eubank back in the mid 90's when 168 was considered a European division. collins was a big draw each side of the pond and would of drawn massive amount of tickets whatever the place to be. the money was horrible. that is all. similar to the calzaghe-johnson thing. it was going to happen, but 2 guys who thought they where bigger than the other.
