How long would it take (to train at boxing) and be able to defend yourself?

See that happen a lot. Why would anyone want to just hit some random person in the face on a night out? Idiots :fire

Ok there is some difference, but I would do exactly same to the guy who throws my pizza to the floor while insulting me.
Atleast I would insult him and say hes better pay that pizza, which point he would probably attack and it would be self defence anyway

Well Jim there are some not-so-nice people in the world, maybe it was just 2am and this guy had nothing better to do but some people will do anything in their sad, pathetic lives to justify their existence.

And this is why it's so funny reading some of these posts, they make it seem as if I grabbed the guy by his hair and tried to **** him in the restaurant. ALL we were doing was TALKING, he was annoyed that when he told us to "shut the **** up", we didn't. I didn't even say "No, YOU shut the **** up", when he screamed at us we ignored him, until he approached US and did something.

Simply leaving the restaurant and eating outside on the sidewalk because some drunk idiot yells at you is an insult to your very existence

Crossing the street, hmmm, Lets look at some consequences.

Potentially getting hit by a car, which then swerves and kills a child. Two families suffer losses and grieve for many many months. Friends of the victims are in ruins. Driver who accidentally killed you will suffer manslaughter charges and go to jail for 25 years. Not to mention funeral costs, medical costs, etc.

Or you could just stay home and never cross the street.

So when the guy threw my pizza on the ground and was 2 feet away from me, what do you think he was going to do next? Wipe the table? He was going to fight no matter what.

But reading your scenario makes you look like a hypocrite. What if (since you love hypotheticals so much), what if you killed him after "kicking the **** out of him"? You think you're simply going to say "self-defense" and get off that easy?

Why not, after pushing him off, did you not just RUN away? Why make the situation worse??????

You seem like one of the people you speak of.

You don't get it, it shouldn't have reached this point. Maybe that'll sink in soon...

It seems you need help understanding the situation you were in; I’ll give you some help.

If you’re in a restaurant and some guy starts shouting “shut the **** up!” at you, you have to ask yourself “Am I being too loud?” If you and your friends aren’t being too loud then it must be something else you’re doing. If you still can’t figure out what is wrong with the guy and he’s still shouting insults at you, he has to be removed from the situation because, well, he’s just being a twat. How can you do this? You could ask the workers of the restaurant to speak to the guy. This leaves two scenarios – either he shuts up or he’s removed. Then again there’s also the police option. Either way the guy’s out of the situation and it’s not your problem anymore.

You allowed the situation to escalate to a fight, simple as that. It was your fault as you let it happen, plus the fact you initiated the fight

You could leave or like I said earlier ask the staff to remove him or you could always phone the police, you ever think of that?

Wow. Are you really that simple? Comparing crossing the road to sitting there waiting for a fight with some guy? :patsch

Again, it should never have got to this point. Why exactly did you just sit there and do absolutely nothing until the guy walked over? And then when he was there what did you do to diffuse the situation? Oh yeah, you threw your drink in his face. Smart move

If that happens through defending myself then it happens, nothing hypocritical at all. I'm failing to see where the guy walked up and punched you in the face in your story...

So he could have punched me in the back of the head? Very clever.

The difference between our two scenarios is I had no choice, you did. I didn't stand there and let the guy hit me after arguing, he just walked up and punched me. You sat there like an idiot waiting for a fight to kick off.

You see the difference between self defence and starting a fight yet?

    Hey dude,

the guy in the pizza place was a *****, but I agree with many in that you did help the situation develop into a fight. Can't say I blame you though.

Boxing will help, as opposed to being completely untrained. But like others have said, something like Krav Maga, or traditional Japanese ju jitsu (Samurai bujutsu) might be suited more to street fighting. They focus on using both punching, kicking and engaging in the clinch. Although I don't think most fights end up on the floor, I personally think that when untrained fighters fight it ends up with grappling and close range attacking most of the time.

Most martial arts will teach you that staying out of a fight is the best possible option because you don't know what may happen, often this is to protect the other person from yourself. Even boxing teaches you how to control aggression and stay calm under intense pressure.

I have done bits of karate, muay thai and box now (mostly forced as my older brother was a martial artist and I got dragged along), there's one great book he gave me called Small Wars by Geoff Thompson. It's written by a nightclub bouncer who's a martial arts expert. It's all about how to deal with confrontation, what signs suggest someone wants a fight as opposed to situations that can possibly be diffused and give you actual hints and tips on how to deal with situations. get that book bro, it's only a few $'s and I hope it will help you immensely.

Think is though, if the guy is determined that he is gonna fight he may have followed him outside and smacked him in the back of the head. Not saying he would but you just dont know.

I can see why you get into fights all the time. Seriously, you ask people for advice, they give you advice, you attack them and tell them their advice sucks. Fix your attitude bro.

You're right, the next time someone insults me and my friends I'll make sure we make a dash to the exit instead of ignoring them and enjoying the meal we paid for (like I did).

Or maybe...just maybe...you're too much of an imbecile to understand that some people will want to fight regardless of your response. Unless my life is threatened I refuse to simply be hauled away like an animal because some homophobic idiot hurls insults. Like honestly, don't you get it??? Do you think all those people beat to a pulp all over the world have brought that on themselves? I want (no make that I am) going to learn to box NOT so I can be Mr. Tough Guy, but if push comes to shove I'll have the resources to defend myself.

At least you guys understand the situation.

Many of the people responding here are just talking out of their asses like those anti-bullying lectures we received in grade school (i.e.: "When you're getting bullied tell the bully to stop and be nice!") -- it just doesn't work that way.

Here's some of the "advice" that I receive from that very same post:

Convenient of you to leave that out, clearly my response was out of line

You've received a lot of good advice in this thread.

Even disregarding the homophobic comments of some posters, the overwhelming majority of people here have said that the fight you described was totally avoidable had you handled the situation in a different manner.

Your subsequent responses only confirmed what most people had already pointed out, that you seem to have some sense of entitlement and an attitude problem, both of which seem to compound and put you in positions and situations in which you don't need to be.

I like how you ignored the part about removing the guy from the situation i.e. speak to the workers or phone the police. Doesn't surprise me, though, you still don't get it.

Some people do want to fight regardless, what you fail to understand (mostly because of your immature attitude) is that there are ways of dealing with these people. Asking the workers or phoning the police is an easy way out, but again because of your attitude problem you can't work out this solution.

So you're prepared to fight for silly reasons. This is what will get you in trouble in life, mostly because you're an idiot.

People with your attitude bring it upon themselves, yes. Live I've said many, many times you could have avoided a fight but you initiated one. Don't you get it yet?

So you'll get into more fights. Nice. Hopefully you will end up in hospital and learn something.

We understand you're an immature child that gets into fights with other pathetic children that don't understand how the world works. Seriously you have no clue.

Most guys here, including myself, are speaking from experience. You came here and asked a question, we answered using our experience. Because it wasn't the answer you were looking for you've started attacking everyone. You're too immature to learn.

im sorry but no matter how 'gay' he was acting the other fella was an absoloute bellend. no matter how camp etc someone was acting it wouldn't bother me in the slightest.
