I finally got to watch Ottke-Glen Johnson and Ottke clearly won that fight.First time seeing Ottke and you know what?He was a pretty good boxer-much better then I had been lead to believe by some of these posts about him.One of the few boxer who actually set things up with feints. Was he in Roy Jones league? No.Would JC beaten him?More then likely but he wouldn't have had an easy time. I think back to one poster who said alot of people haven't seen Ottke box (when he was in his prime)and they just jump on the Ottke sucks bandwagon. And there is NOWAY Glen Johnson won that fight. He got outboxed.:deal
He should have lost to reid and mitchell imo but that's it. He was a good top contender it's just a shame he never wanted to fight joe or beyer.
No one will ever really give Ottke his due...a bit like Hugo Corro..they were both very good fighters with styles that most boxing fans get bored with. It isn't really justified.
It's true, he doesn't get his dues ever this man. He spend a good number of years in the top 3 of the division.
He was every bit a champion as Calzaghe during the time. Generally was rated higher as well. Hard to call him just a contender.
The big fight that never materialized was Ottke--Dariusz M. It was talked about and Ottke had that amateur victory over the guy, but it would've been a much tougher fight at 175 for 12 rounds.
Conversely joe was ever bit of contender as ottke during the time. Who did he beat to win his world championship? Once girard left the division the top 3 guys were ottke, beyer and joe. They never fought each other so how can there have been a champion? No. The champion was decided when joe beat mikel. It remains vacant until we have a winner between ward and froch.
That´s more or less what I´m saying for years. He didn´t lose to Mitchell either. Close fight that could have gone either way but not a robbery, like Brewer I and Larsen - I had Ottke losing to Brewer but winning against Larsen and Mitchell and he beat Brewer the second time around clearly. The fight with Beyer didn´t come of because they had the same promoter, Sauerland, who wanted to milk both fighters. That was not about him not wanting to fight Beyer. And Calzaghe is as much at fault as Ottke too for that fight not coming of. Have you evidence that the cut came from a punch and not a headbutt? I´ve never seen one. Ottke actually had two amateur victories over DM. Would have been an interesting fight for sure, close to 50/50.
I never said robbery. I think he lost tho but it was close, think I said this on a post already on this thread? Yeah I do buy that actually, maybe it's a cultural thing to do with respect but german fighters rarely call people out and often fight who their promoters tell them to. I don't believe for one second ottke was scared of anyone. I think he proved against johnson and mundine that he was a level above most smw's of his day. He proved against mitchel and reid he was at worst competitive with any smw of his day. The one thing separating him and joe is that he never got his defining fights. I know he beat mitchell but it wasn't quite the event it could have been because at the time there were better fighters. Joe was basically the last man standing of the trio and then had his victories over lacy and mikel to separate him. As an aside, how did you view the beyer-green fights?
the fact he knowingly had referees and judges in the pocket creates a lot of doubt and rightly so imo, in the reid fight he took full advantage of having the ref on his side - even complaining when getting punched in the face. glad his reputation is tainted, as it should be.
certainly used to play the system. effective boxer though. worked in quick bursts then ran around and took a breather.
