About ten years ago, several adolescent male elephants were brought to an African reserve to live. They were rescued from an area where there was poaching going on if I remember right. There were other species on the reserve as well, though no other elephants save this bunch. Those adolescents were behaving strangely at first, but soon got downright destructive -tearing down fences, assaulting other animals for fun, and raping the rhinos. Yeah, that's right, they were raping the rhinos. Their keepers didn't know what the hell to do. They tried to ignore it and hoped it would change by itself. It didn't. They studied the phenomena and threw up their hands. Then they brought someone in -a researcher or a native with common sense. He said "bring in a bull." They did and everything changed. That bull kicked the hell out of the young 'ens and set lines. See, "ignoring" adolescents (like those few on Classic) who don't know how to act only encourages them. Don't assume these guys have sense enough to take a hint -ignore them and they think their doing good. I'm no Puritan. Having fun -sometimes at other poster's expense- is a part of this whole experience. But men have lines, because most of us learned from men who straightened us out. Boys like D.T. the Pitiful never learned how to act. So he thinks it's cool to launch obscenities at a man who could be his great grandfather. He doesn't have any lines; and he is probably stupid enough to think that's something to flaunt. ESB Classic needs more bulls.
DT has always been a **** wit and a troll. He knows nothing about boxing, and was run out of Yahoo Answers Boxing for his constant put downs and insults. He claims to know more about the sport than anyone else alive, yet he always gets his answers voted down because he doesn't know ****. He also claims Muhammad Ali, a man who, while great, fought at just one weight, is number two all-time p4p (yes, I know opinions are subjective, but Ali is not a top ten p4p all-timer). He hates Harry Greb because Greb was a White fighter and feels that he got more press than he deserved because of it (he actually said this on Yahoo answers). In short, the guy is a piece of ****. He should stick to his other topic, football, because the man knows jack ****ing **** about boxing.
To evaluate harry Greb's place in history,on the basis of watching Greb "fooling" around with Phil.Jack O'Brien, who was nearly 50 years old in 1925, is absurd. Greb was shown here training [before cameras] for his upcoming bout with Mickey Walker, who owned the gym where Greb trained for this bout with the great Mickey Walker. How would you who are skeptics spar with an old man,who happened to own the gym.? Beat him up, go all out in front of a camera which HAD to make Harry Greb self-conscious ,or play around with the elderly O'Brien,as shown on this small clip ? Another point ,Greb in an actual fight was always in HIGH GEAR,and sparring in front of a camera was most likely uncomfortable for him... P.S. I have a complete copy of the whole session that afternoon, on the roof of O'Brien's gym in NYC. In one segment showing Harry Greb as he really was he is playing handball, and it shows Greb, while waiting for the handball to come to him ,he is BOUNCING to and froe, on his toes like second nature to him before the ball arrives for him to hit...When I first saw that scene,I understood perfectly what Gene Tunney ascribed to Greb, "he was never in the same spot for more than a second",Unquote! They say "one picture is worth a thousand words ",and this handball clip, does that for me, not a top Harry Greb ,sparring with an old man before the new-fangled camera...
It's obvious in this footage that Greb is laughing almost thoughout its entirety. It's lighthearted sparring with an old dude, flattering the legend out of respect. He is so obviously going at 10% tapping the left jab to the midsection in slow motion, or totally pulling the punch altogether. You'd have to be a Grade A Moron to use this footage to evaluate Greb in any meaningful manner.
I honestly think h2h ranking of fighters is crazy. Surely by that criteria barkley would be ranked higher than hearns atg. Douglas would be ranked above tyson and fulton would be ranked about langford.
I saw that particular show on Animal Planet. In fact they brought in TWO bull elephants. You are right, the bulls taught the obstreperous young'uns some manners really fast. Unfortunately, we do not have the same access to these trolls that the bulls had to the upstarts in order to teach them that lesson. For instance, I remember Manbearpig tossing some choice words in your direction a few months back; words he no doubt would think twice about saying if you were hovering over him. These guys talk their trash behind the safety of a computer screen. You may be right and you may not be, I don't know. I've always felt that addressing their nonsense or challenging them on their trash talk just gets them off. Trolls live to disrupt and upset things. Not posting on threads they start (no matter how compelling the question) and just ignoring them altogether seems like the best way to make them fade away and go find another site where they can get some "action". Responding to them is that "action" they crave. None come here to be ignored. It diffuses them. Then again, I could be wrong. Just tossing around ideas and looking for solutions.
My biggest gripe with the book in question was it tended to gloss over some of Grebs important but lesser known wins that could, if reasonably explained, could in fact give an even greater understanding and appreciation to Grebs legacy. Something I hope Klomton will do.
If Greb isn't up there p4p then what the **** do you have to do to get plaudits? P.S Greb would U.D Dempsey.
Well, you could be right too. Though I think that when enough posters express outrage at the really awful posts the moderators will be more likely to bounce the fools quicker.
