First of all Im sure you all know about the Khan Sky dispute, There are many threads about that topic and this thread is not about that. This is whether with help with the help of Golden boy which is a financial and boxing behemoth Primetime can position itself as the Showtime of the UK. Where Sky box office would still be the HBO of the UK, Primetime could rise to become the Showtime of the UK with active GBP support. Please see this video of Oscar De La Hoya on Primetime: http://www.hattonboxing.com/tv/features/khan-v-mccloskey-post-fight-news-conference If GBP gives Primetime the following: 1) Exclusivity to show GBP in the UK, Effectively cutting Sky out of the market for GBP cards which would be a huge shot in the arm and boost for Primetime and a demoralizing blow for Sky. 2) GBP invests several million dollars and buys into Primetime in a big way to help them with marketing, high definition, bringing in experienced Americans who work in media to the Uk to work alongside Primetime. I think Goldenboy is just too powerful a company with too much financial power that if it decided to position Primetime as a direct competitor to Sky, There is nothing Sky could do to stop it. This would be win-win for the fans as it would provide greater competition which would drives prices down for consumers and provide greater variety. One thing for sure I have said before Khan coming to Primetime in the long run may be bad for Khan unless there are changes in Primetime, But Khan has been nothing short of a God send for Primetime because Khan has brought the full unequivocal backing of Golden boy with him.
Demoralizing? Sky wouldn't give two shits, they are doing the sport a huge favour even showing any boxing.
Richard Schaefer is coming to the UK this week for the Khan - Judan Press conference, He will also meet Sky and Primetime executives, I think the outcomes of the meetings will decide what GBP is going to do. I think people forget that GBP is a business, Richard Schaefer being a Swiss banker from a banking family, If they think they can make money they will invest, Let see how many millions of dollars Schaefer brings for Primetime on his visit to the UK.
Of course not. Oscar thought Primetime sounded a little like Showtime and made a stupid comment about it at a press conference. Let's be real, it isn't the first dumb thing Oscar's said.
But, Khan aside, wheres the money for GBP to be arsed getting their hands dirty scrapping around with this sort of stuff? After Khan leaves the scene they'll go back to not giving a **** about the Micky Mouse UK 4am boxing crowd (of which I'm one!!). The money just isn;t there IMHO.
No way Showtime in the US is so much more than primetime which is a complete unknown channel except to a tiny portion of the uk population - mainly hardcore boxing fans Showtime has so much more to offer. Even if you had top ppv fight on primetime, I doubt they would ever reach the level of 500,000 buys. Even with infrastructure in place to deal with such demand, primetime potential is just too small due to the nature of the channel. Anyway, I doubt gbp are that stupid to get on the wrong side of sky. They need sky than sky need them. Sky only really make big money on a few fights. And you could see when setanta was around sky were hardly worried, they didn't lose much sleep over not having broadcasting rights to calzaghe fights. They always had big fights of hatton. The next super fight likely after wlad v haye is mayweather v khan. If that is on pri etime the most buys that will do is 250,000 even with good promotion. If it on sky however, I think that fight could do close to million buys if not more. Hatton did well, but that hatton.
Showtime in America is part of the organisation on one of the big nationwide networks there, and primetime here is dormant 99% of the time and shows the occaisonal boxing or MMA card every month or so. There's no comparison, and they can't compete with Sky Sports.
You guys are not answering the question, The question is if WITH GBP dollars Primetime can become the Showtime of the UK?, Not if Primetime can be the showtime of the UK as it stands now. The motive for GBP would clearly and obviously be profit in the long run.
Posted by Undisputed P4P: :good Sky picks and chooses, If GBP works out a deal that shows all GBP fights then it would be better for GBP in the long run and they will get more and more PPVs. Primetime expects 100,000 PPV for Khan Judah which if they managed that would be a great feat and shows massive potential for GBP in Primetime.
no. one contract with a US promoter is not going to help and like you said Schaefer is a smart businessman so he isnt going to spend millions of dollars on somethinh he wont see a return from
GBP would never break their deal with Sky. In the past, they've dealt with Hatton and currently deal with Haye. They know how huge a PPV with Sky's backing can become. No matter how big the fight is, Primetime are always going to be limited because it's not a genuine channel and can't hype fights like Sky. At the most, they can expect 100,000 buys and that really is "the most". Sky can, and have, had a 1,000,000 PPV buys.
