Chacon was.....well, Chacon, wasn't he? I agree with you really, if the discipline had been there at his physical and technical peak (and he had a technical peak in his earlier days, excellent boxer-puncher that he was) his career might have panned out very differently, though perhaps not nearly as thrill-inducingly.
Neurologically, he'd surely be better off than he is. From what I understand, he's now in about as good a place as he could be, reportedly taken care of by a nurse charged by the state of California to administer to him, and basking in fan adoration, he might be fully functional as Little Red is if he'd taken better care of himself during his early career. (I don't know if there was a more charismatic boxer during my lifetime.)
